goodbyes, and wished me luck. I remember turning around heading back to my dorm room and thinking "what the hell do I do now?" At the time, I was an immature freshman who thought he could - despite what my professors said - balance getting his doctorate in physical therapy with drinking in frat house basements on Tuesdays (and four other days per week), and going to Mojos on weekends (yes, I said Mojos). Surely, I could skate by with minimal work and maximum Xbox with my roommates, because well, it worked in high school and the eight-person Madden franchise was fun.
It should surprise no one that UB isn't considered a national powerhouse when it comes to sports. That may sound disappointing, but it's the truth, and it doesn't always have to be that way. In fact, I think UB is already on the way to becoming a solid athletics program, and the proof is just what I've seen and experienced over my four years here. Say what you want about the "chicken and beer scandal of 2011," but when all was said and done, the Red Sox lost their manager with the highest winning percentage in franchise history, and the general manager who helped bring two world series titles to Boston. Bobby Valentine took over as manager - much to the chagrin of the entire team and most of the fan base - and so far hasn't been the "spark" that was desperately needed. I vehemently hated the hiring of Bobby V, and still don't think he belongs in Boston.
The UB athletic department received one of its largest donations in history on Sunday.
The "Dream Team" at the 2012 Olympics will be called the "Green Team" if Dwayne Wade has anything to say about it. On Wednesday, Wade stated that he thinks athletes should be monetarily compensated for their participation in the Olympic games. The Olympics are widely made up of amateur athletes who have to make due, improvise, and work odd or part time jobs in order to finance their training and participation in the games. For 16 years, Home Depot employed athletes part-time with flexible scheduling to give them the opportunity to train.
The athletic department has yet another job vacancy to fill as Senior Associate Athletics Director Paul Vecchio accepted the athletic director position at Alfred University. The move was announced on Tuesday, April 10.
