Picking a winner

Voting polls for the 2007 Student Association elections open tomorrow, and while candidates may be holding their breath for a few days, undergraduate students should be taking in a collective sigh of relief, as this year's candidate pool seems stronger than it has been in years. With that being said, The Spectrum's editorial board recently met with the candidates to see whom this publication would be endorsing.

"GSA Vice President, Treasurer impeached, removed from office"

The Graduate Student Association Senate decided by two-thirds vote to remove the remaining two-thirds of the GSA's executive board in a meeting this past Wednesday, in addition to electing Catalina Crespo as president for the rest of the semester.Adhering to the suggestions of an inquiry committee formed in light of a controversy over "misappropriated funds," the Senate voted to both impeach and remove Vice President Jillian Flood and Treasurer Sakeet Varma.Former President Aubrey Balcom resigned in a December senate meeting where he faced impeachment and removal from office for overspending on a Seattle conference trip he had taken with Vice President Jillian Flood."I will not slink away like a coward and resign," Flood replied in tears to senators who asked why she ignored an opportunity to resign before the impeachment and removal proceedings took place - despite admitting wrongdoing during and following the incident."If it outweighs the good and the hard work I've done for this office," Flood said, "then I don't want to take that away from you guys."Balcom requested $2,177.78 as reimbursement for restaurant, hotel and rental car charges, in addition to other expenses that he and Flood had incurred on a trip with an approved budget of only $500.

Underground repairs continue on North Campus

Underground repair work in the North Campus Promenade is taking longer than expected due to an "unusual" delay, according to Keith Tramp of University Facilities.Tramp explained that the university's air conditioning system is comprised of a series of chilled water lines, or pipes carrying chemically treated water around campus."That's how all the buildings are cooled on North Campus," he said.According to Tramp, the muddy chasm dug in the Promenade between Lockwood Library and the Student Union was for a repair job of leaking pipes carrying chilled water to each academic building's individual air conditioning system."The chilled water line system is currently turned off for the winter, and they're going to repave the whole Founder's Plaza soon," he said.

Celebrity-roasting comedian takes aim at UB

Jeffrey Ross's greatest claim to fame might be making fun of celebrities. As Roastmaster General of the Friar's Club and creator of the animated MTV2 program "Where My Dogs At?" Ross has laid enough Hollywood impersonations on television audiences to make other late-night comedy shows look like "20/20" with Barbara Walters. However, Ross showed that he had not lost his standup touch last Thursday night, as he kept a packed crowd roaring in the Center for the Arts Mainstage Theater. He even went so far as to give UB students some life advice."In the words of John Kerry: 'stay in school, or else you'll end up stuck in Iraq,'" he joked.Ross avoided his trademark celebrity mocking for most of the night, but came prepared with insults for everyone else.He entered stage at the end of a string of event staff, which he then lined up for abuse."You're a big guy," he told one staff member.
