My big fat Lebanese family

I'm 14-years-old, in the pre-cell phone era, and a boy calls me for the first time. My ultra protective 16-year-old brother answers, scares him to death, and the boy never calls again.Welcome to life in a big family.When the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was released, my cousins and I saw an eerie resemblance with the characters in the film and our family.

Real campus politics

Working on Capital Hill in the middle of Washington D.C. among fancy business suits and briefcases is where students like Kristy Wind, a senior political science major, aspire to end up someday.Thanks to the Washington Internship Program, it happened a lot sooner for Wind than she ever thought it would."I do a lot of the court preparation, like subpoenas and things," Wind said.The program is run through SUNY Brockport but is open to all SUNY students every fall and spring semester.The internship counts as an entire semester of classes at 15 credits.

With a voice that awed the audience and immense support from family and friends, Whitney Frazier felt nothing short of shocked when she took first place as UB's Idol Tuesday evening.The sophomore communications major almost won third when the Emcee of the event announced the wrong winner.

Never say never

As a local TV show host and director of UB's Pharmacy Residency Program, UB alumna Tammie Lee Demler has left her mark in her field both at UB and throughout New York State.For Demler, putting her focus on the single dream of becoming a pharmacist opened new doors of opportunity she never knew existed."A family friend was a pharmacist and he just loved what he did," Demler said.

From George Washington to George W. Bush, every US President has shared one particular quality - leadership.Students at UB, however, know that they don't have to become president to be great leaders in life."If you are the CEO of a major company or simply in a group on campus you have to be a great leader," said Melanie Bentley-Cruz director of the Students in Organizing and Understanding Leadership program.According to Bentley-Cruz, the S.O.U.L program was created for any student looking to enhance the value of their leadership.

UB's power couples: Claude Welch and Jannette Ludwig

Love comes in all forms. For married professors Jannette Ludwig and Claude Welch, it's silver.Ludwig, a modern languages professor, and Claude Welch, a political science professor, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in June 2006."We celebrated in our backyard," Ludwig said.
