Bush Defends Patriot Act in Buffalo

With his campaign in full swing, President George W. Bush moderated a panel discussion Tuesday morning in Buffalo with local and state officials about the USA Patriot Act.Over 700 first responders from area police and fire departments filled the invitation-only event, held at Kleinhans Music Hall on the city's West Side.Bush took the stage at 9:35 a.m.

New Complex Slated For Sweet Home Road

A new off-campus apartment complex designed for UB students is one step closer to reality.Thursday night, the Town of Amherst's planning board approved a re-zone of 10 acres of land across from Sweet Home High School for a complex, which will house 828 students.American Campus Communities, the same company that built both Hadley and Flint Villages, will be developing the property.

"Turn onto politics or politics will turn on you" -Ralph NaderI want to marry Ralph Nader. It would not be sexual, because he is nearly 70 and does not believe in cosmetic drugs (aka Viagra). I would merely be his intellectual mistress.So while most women my age are drooling over the latest model on the Abercrombie bag, I am busy defending the love of my life against misplaced attacks that he should not be in the presidential race.To begin, these pointed attacks have criticized Nader for being a selfish, egomaniacal man who is out to cost the Democrats the election again.

Head of Miramax Studios Establishes UB Scholarship

Legendary film producer and UB alumnus Harvey Weinstein donated $50,000 to a scholarship fund for minority students from New York State applying for UB's master's degree program in film and performance.Weinstein attended UB from 1969 to 1973 as an English major but did not complete a degree.

Slumlords a Peril of Heights Living

For many students, the light at the end of the dormitory tunnel is their own off-campus apartment - the chance for a little unbridled freedom and a whole room to themselves.The freedom of an off-campus apartment, however, doesn't come without a price, which often comes in the forms of bills, repairs and negligent landlords.For Dan Mohorter, a senior English major, an invisible landlord means a broken washing machine."The motor burned out or the fan broke, and I called him to fix it, and he said I'm not responsible for that because it's not in the lease," Mohorter said.According to Mohorter, the washer still hasn't been fixed and he hasn't heard from his landlord, who he hasn't seen in eight months, since he requested the repair."It's somewhat worth it to be living off-campus," Mohorter said.

Crowd Salutes Kerry

A shout went up from a line of people curled around the Ellicott Square Building Sunday afternoon as John Kerry drove by, waving, in a black Chevy Suburban, escorted by police vehicles.And when he walked into the glassy atrium of the downtown Buffalo office building, Kerry was greeted by over 500 Western New Yorkers chanting, "Kerry!

Heights Task Force Plans Spring Raids

As the weather improves this spring, shorts will be donned, bikes will be unlocked and off-campus parties will intensify.That is why the University Heights Problem Property Task Force has a message for students this year: expect more raids.The task force, a coalition of community groups that includes Buffalo's police and fire departments, the Office of Student Affairs, and University Heights community associations, met Tuesday at the Gloria J.

"Farewell, Potholes"

With the help of state and federal funding, the City of Buffalo will embark on a major reconstruction of Main Street near South Campus at the end of March.Of particular interest to students, the $16.1 million project will reconfigure the intersections at Kenmore Avenue and Bailey Avenue - areas that currently confound drivers and pedestrians.Ultimately, Main Street's utility lines will be rebuilt and its pavement will be replaced from Bailey Avenue to Hertel Avenue, through the University Heights strip.

UB 4 Kerry Unseats UB for Dean

The political tides of primary season are turning away from Howard Dean and toward John Kerry, and campus groups are following suit.Last week, a handful of UB students established UB 4 Kerry, a group formed as an outlet for students to promote Kerry's campaign platform."There is a lot of support (for Kerry at UB) but a lot more out there to get," said Tim Barry, a senior history major and founder of UB 4 Kerry.Barry became interested in Kerry's campaign around the start of the year.
