If the East needs one thing to brag about this year, it could be that the favored teams have been more dominant than the West, so far.
It has come to the UB Department of Athletics' attention that Jim Hofher, coach of the Bulls football squad, has a blemish on his permanent record that could prevent him from ever coaching again, while also leaving question marks on next year's season.Failing to correct this manner would have the Bulls coach walking on thin ice.According to Todd Grimes, Xavier Middle School physical education teacher, Hofher failed 7th grade gym class due to an outstanding number of un-prepared's.
With the Mid-American Conference Tournament getting underway tonight, Bulls guard Calvin Cage couldn't have picked a better time to raise his game to new levels.Cage detonated against the first and second place MAC East teams over a two-game stretch not long ago, averaging 20 points a game in those contests, while shooting above 50 percent.
Daniel Gilbert catches the ball, driving it into a wave of defenders. The sweat that had escaped the grasp of his white headband dripped down the side of his cheek.
In increasing their 64-point per game output from last year to 73 a game this year, the UB men's basketball team's improved offensive play generally receives much credit for the dramatic overall turnaround on the court and in the standings. But in Saturday's ESPN Bracket Buster matchup with the Indiana State Sycamores, the Bulls relied on a bevy of tough defense.
"Why drive when you can fly?" is Michael Jordan's clich?
A super sized rally with a side of 3-bombs rocketed the UB men's basketball team to victory on Sunday afternoon against the Ball State Cardinals.Jason Bird and Turner Battle helped turn things around for the Bulls (8-9, 4-5 Mid-American Conference), who trailed by double digits not once, but twice during the first half.Sunday's 84-73 win marked the first victory in 24 years for Buffalo over the Cardinals, as well as their first three-game conference winning streak since joining the MAC six years ago."To win against a program like that is a good feeling," said UB head coach Reggie Witherspoon.
Prior to Saturday's game against the Ball State Cardinals, the UB women's basketball team was on fire for the first time this season, winning three of their previous four games. The flame was burning, and the Bulls finally looked hot.
A lot of things changed in Buffalo during winter break. The sobering reality of winter in Buffalo has finally hit, UB has a new president and the women's basketball team has made a few surprising changes to its roster. One of the few things unchanged is the Bulls' Mid-American Conference standing.
The Buffalo Bulls sent eight swimmers to this weekend's U.S. Open Swimming Championships held in Federal Way, Wash., and were able to swim away with two points, the first time in UB history a relay team scored points at the competition. On top of that, there were some individual performances to complement the team effort.Aviv Oren (UB record holder and 2003 MAC champion) took home 24th place out of 47 in the 100-meter breaststroke finals after qualifying for the event on Thursday. The top 24 swimmers advanced to the finals and Oren placed 22nd in the preliminaries to give himself the opportunity with a time of 1:06.42, which was narrowly better than his finals time of 1:06.80.
