Soundlab Closes When Pressed With Safety Regulations

Two events that took place in February are now impacting how Buffalonians get their late-night entertainment.After 99 people died at a Great White show in Warwick, R.I., and 21 died - with many more injured - trying to escape a fight at a Chicago, Ill., nightclub, increased governmental regulation has impacted nightly entertainment spots across the country.

From UB to SNL: A Success Story

"A sperm bank is just like a regular bank, except after you make a deposit at a sperm bank, you lose interest," cracked Alan Zweibel, former "Saturday Night Live" comedy writer and producer in an interview prior to his April 1 performance at the CFA screening room.Zweibel came to UB as part of the Department of Media Study's "Visiting Celebrity Scholar Series." It's the kind of gag Zweibel made $7 for when he was starting out as a joke writer after graduating from UB in 1972.

"UB Artists Compete in 2003 Rumsey, Potenza Competition"

The annual Rumsey and Potenza Competition is an opportunity for junior art majors to show their skills and compete for two different awards.The Rumsey Award was established through a donation from Buffalo painter Evelyn Rumsey Lord and the Potenza Scholarship is sponsored by the family of Sally Hoskins Potenza, a UB art student who died before completing her studies, according to a press release.This year's awards range from $2,500 to $3000.According to the official information packet published by the art department, the Rumsey Award is meant to fund a summer program for 2003 that may either involve travel for artistic and personal enrichment, or for tuition assistance for a summer program in an art studio sponsored by an accredited institution other than UB.Competitors must also submit a formal written proposal to the faculty of judges to explain their intentions for the award describing travel plans or a study project.The work, which can be viewed in the basement gallery of the CFA, varies from painted to graphic art, traditional to contemporary.

Costa Rican Sun in a Japanese Bar

It is February in Buffalo. It is the coldest, dreariest and most colorless time of the year. For students suffering from cabin fever, Tuesday's Christopher MacDonald photography display in Blu - a lounge located inside of Osaka, a Japanese restaurant on Main Street - provided the ideal cure.At the display, it was possible to feel warmth again, and not just the kind radiating from a central heating system.

Movie Review: National Security

Is it possible for Martin Lawrence to make a good film? It seems not, since flops like "Blue Streak" and "Black Knight." Lawrence's latest role in "National Security" just adds another notch into a well-worn belt of garbage movies.This isn't the first time director Dennis Dugan has embarrassed himself with an eye-roller.
