Resident Advisors Honored With Nancy Welch Awards

Five resident advisors were honored Tuesday for building a sense of community in their residence halls at the 2002 Nancy Welch Awards ceremony.The award, given each year in honor of the late Nancy Welch, resident coordinator of UB's Rachel Carson College, was presented to resident advisors Brian Clare, Adam Haney, Ivan Loh, Corinne Novak and Michael Bernhard.Clare, a resident advisor in the Spaulding Quad of the Ellicott complex, won first place for his "Spaulbados Beach Party" program."We wanted people in the hall to get a chance to know each other and have some fun," said Clare.

Study Proves Lefties Victims of Handicap

A study released today by UB's Center for Cognitive Science Research has determined that left-handed people display significantly lower intelligence levels than right-handers.The study, conducted over a three-year period involving over 5,000 subjects ages 10 to 65, utilized various IQ, reasoning and logic competency tests to determine whether left-handedness affects intelligence."We're not trying to say that left-handers are dumb, just that they are dumber than the norm," said the study's founder Dr. Michael Schroeder, who specializes in hand rehabilitation.On average, the left-handed people who participated in the study scored 40 percent lower on the competency tests than right-handers.

"Crisis Services Offers Helping Hands, Voices"

Over 200 Erie County residents who experience emotional or personal crises find out they are not alone when they pick up the phone and dial Crisis Services.The not-for-profit agency - also referred to as Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service, Inc. - has been providing professional assistance to Western New York residents in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week since 1968.

"BERT targets Region's Pollution, Underemployment With EPA Grant"

UB's Center for Integrated Waste Management has teamed up with local organizations in an attempt to simultaneously address two community issues - unemployment and the environment.The Brownfields and Environmental Restorative Training program (BERT), organized by the waste management center and funded by a $200,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and private contributions, trains disadvantaged Western New Yorkers in environmental redevelopment procedures.

Love is in the air, and as area restaurants plan for one of the biggest nights of the year, UB students make plans to celebrate Valentine's Day with everything from fine dining to Chinese food delivery.Russ Salvatore, owner of Salvatore's Italian Gardens in Depew, is getting ready for a busy week."We're already booked, not just for the holiday, but for Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well," said Salvatore.

"Ski Resorts, Outdoor Enthusiasts Dreaming of a White Winter"

Every winter, skiers and snowboarders anxiously await the first snowfall of the season. Buffalo winter enthusiasts this year faced a dry November - the first time in the history of the city when there was no measurable snowfall in November - preventing local ski resorts from opening until late last month when a major snowstorm finally hit Western New York, dropping 82.3 inches of snow on the Queen City.The record-breaking snowfall in November 2000 gave the skiing industry a jumpstart that allowed many resorts to open before Thanksgiving.
