Club Sports Struggle for Funding

Many of the Student Association's club sports are struggling to acquire the necessary funding to keep their teams afloat and competitive -- a trend that, according to the sports clubs, has reared its ugly head each year.Unlike varsity sports, which are funded by the Division of Athletics, club sports rely entirely on the money allocated to them by SA.

Construction in Capen Lobby Finished

After five months of curiosity from students and anticipation from administrators, construction of the Undergraduate Admissions Student Recruitment Center in the lobby of Capen Hall was finished Tuesday.The new center will serve as the cornerstone for the department's Visit UB program, which gave 800 campus tours to over 2,700 prospective freshmen and transfer students last year."It's our place where we will be entertaining prospective students and their parents," said Sean Sullivan, UB vice provost for enrollment and planning.

Local Nuclear Waste Site the Focus of Teach-in

Campus activists held a teach-in at the Natural Sciences Complex Wednesday night to educate students about what they see as shortcomings of a government proposal to clean up a radioactive waste dump near Buffalo.In a forum hosted by the UB Environmental Network, environmentalists discussed the past, present and future of the West Valley Demonstration Project, a radioactive waste dump 35 miles south of Buffalo, where nuclear wastes have contaminated the soil.Seth Wochensky of the Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Wastes spoke about the history and present condition of the site.

Camping Out to Combat Homelessness

In the face of bitter cold, vicious winds and icy rain, the Community Action Corps held an all-night sleep-out marathon Friday challenging students to survive the elements for 12 hours.Nearly 100 students showed up to camp out behind the Student Union for the annual Night Out to fight homelessness, with only cardboard boxes and lots of warm clothing, but by 7 a.m.

Spirituality in Architecture Explored in Asia at Noon Series

Buffalo native Jeffrey Albert, an architect with a passionate personal interest in Asian design and architectural themes, spoke at Park Hall Friday as a part of UB's "Asia at Noon" program, a series of brown-bag lunch lectures sponsored by the Asian Studies Department.Albert is a partner in Foit-Albert Associates, the architectural firm that designed UB's South Lake Village apartment complex in 2000.
