Blue Pride

Warde Manuel stepped onto UB's campus as the university's new Athletics Director eight months ago, and with the academic year coming to a close, Manuel sees both successes in his first year here and places in which he can improve."I'd probably give myself a C, mainly because I give the effort I give and I think it's substantial and I put heart and soul into my job but I always think that there's room for improvement," Manuel said.

Football loses scholarships for failing NCAA grade

UB football is known for losses on the field, but thanks to recent hits in the classroom, the team will lose three scholarships next year under sanctions from the National Collegiate Athletic Association.On Wednesday, the NCAA released a two-year Academic Progress Rate report, showing that the UB squad has a score of 878, well below the standard score of 925 on a 1,000-point scale.New head coach Turner Gill had been informed of the possible scholarship losses while in the interview process for the job in December."They told me that there was a possibility of a scholarship loss this year," Gill said.

Not every girl's a princess

As I watched the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game Friday night, I was at first amused by the antics of the wannabe ballers, but then I started to get aggravated.From the incessant shots of Eva Longoria to the undermining of a women's on-court talent, it began to remind me of my experiences as a sports editor.Despite the fact that two WNBA athletes were on the court playing with the men, the woman that received the most TV time from ESPN was the sultry Desperate Housewife.Longoria was the coach of the H-Town Rockets.

Poor shooting dooms women's hoops at Ball State

Two teams were plagued by poor shooting Saturday, but since one must come out on top, Ball State's 38.5 percent to Buffalo's 38.1 percent from the field ultimately made the difference.Despite previous success on the road, UB women's basketball couldn't overcome its backwards momentum in a 70-56 loss at Ball State.

Schiebner shines as Bulls fall in triple OT

Even though they faced defeat, the women's basketball team set a record while falling to the Northern Illinois Huskies in three overtimes Tuesday night.The Bulls and Huskies battled for 55 minutes in DeKalb, Ill., with NIU winning the longest game in Buffalo women's basketball history, 81-72."It's frustrating to play than many overtimes without walking away with a win," said Bulls head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald.
