SA Assembly Debates Possible SUNY Tuition Increase

During a meeting of the Student Association Assembly on Monday night, student representatives debated whether students should support or act against SUNY tuition increases proposed in the New York State Budget, which is due for approval by January.SUNY Student Assembly Delegate Anthony Burgio said that during the SUNY SA fall conference, delegates discussed the issue of a tuition increase and after an executive committee last week, decided to back the proposal."SUNY SA supports a moderate rational tuition increase, only if the state ties in a plan to put a cap on fees, and if there is an increased state participation (in higher education)," Burgio said.

Porter Quad Renovations Inconvenience Students

With the Buffalo snow about to pile up, some students in the Ellicott Complex are getting ready to bundle up - to do their laundry.This semester, many students in Porter Quadrangle are cut off from laundry facilities and tunnel access to other buildings, due to construction on the ground floors of buildings 1, 2, 3 and 7, forcing them to detour across the terrace to carry out day-to-day activities.The Porter renovations are taking place to give way to the new Student/Parent Response Center, where students and parents will be able to receive information on registering for classes, student records, financial aid, billing and academic advisement."(The center) allowed us to bring together all the organizations and areas together in a tight net," Sullivan said.

Capaldi Delivers State of the University Address

An increase in the amount of funding and research opportunities UB has received in the last year is part of the reason Provost Elizabeth Capaldi feels the university is in "terrific" shape, she said during her State of the University Address at Tuesday's meeting of the Faculty Senate.According to Capaldi, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Architecture and Planning, the School of Computer Science and Engineering and various other departments have received substantial grants this semester, and an additional $50 million to $60 million in new grants is anticipated for January.The amount of money donated to the university is a good measure of the institution's success and quality of research, said Capaldi.
