Snoop Dogg may draw non-hip hop fans

With the Spring Fest lineup set for good, many students say they are looking forward to Saturday night's concert featuring rappers Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, Cassidy and reggae artist Elephant Man.Angela Knight, a senior psychology major, said her reason for attending Spring Fest is all about the performers."I'm going because it's people that I'm actually interested in seeing," she said.

The next big thing

UB's high-tech, high profile center for bioinformatics is on schedule for completion next semester as the new bioinformatics major also nears the end of its development, according to UB officials.The downtown New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences Complex, which has been under construction since 2002, has received over $200 million in funding.According to Bruce Holm, executive director of the center, all construction should be completed "sometime this fall." One of the three buildings that make up the complex, the newest Hauptmann-Woodward Medical Research Institute, is already completed and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for May 12."A whole lot of progress is being made, which I am really excited about," said James Willis, chief of staff to President John Simpson.

Incumbent wins SA Assembly election

Hoping to build on the successes of the past year, the Student Association Assembly re-elected Hassan Shibly as chair on Monday.Shibly, a freshman psychology major, defeated fellow Assembly member Matt Miller in a secret ballot election for the position.After his victory, Shibly said he is looking forward to working hard next year to increase student involvement and tackle student issues."I encourage all students to get involved next year," Shibly said.

'Clean snowmobile team' nabs first place nationally

The members of UB's Society of Automotive Engineers' clean snowmobile team don't have a tan to show for their spring break.But they do have seven first-place trophies.Led by captain Brian Belmont, a junior mechanical engineering major, the team took first place for performance, fuel economy, noise reduction and design practicality to put them in first place at a national competition in Houghton, Mich.The team faced stiff competition from 13 schools in over 10 categories ranging from an oral presentation to a 100-mile endurance trial.

Amid stacks of papers, boxes full of documents and books on sexuality, Ellen Christensen's cheery face and smile have welcomed visitors to her UB office since 1974.In over three decades as the director of Health Education and Human Services, Christensen's sunny and supportive character has helped countless students struggle thorough personal issues and problems.

Students passing through the Student Union got a unique taste of the Middle East on Monday as UB's Hillel kicked off Israel Week with an Israeli market called a "shook."Organizers of the weeklong celebration said they hope to bring to campus a greater awareness about Israel through an array of different events.

Ashes mark beginning of Lent

Many Catholic students across both campuses started the countdown to Easter on Wednesday by attending services and marking their foreheads with ash in observance of Ash Wednesday.Ash Wednesday always occurs 40 days before Easter Sunday every year, and the period between the two is known as Lent.The ashes made from palm leaves are a reminder of mortality and penitence, said Reverend Patrick Keleher, director of the Newman Center and head of the campus Catholic ministries.Keleher has worked at UB for 17 years and said he enjoys working with the university community."A university is a place for people to discuss ideas and learn about each other," Keleher said.
