"Unique, diverse, affordable"

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, the University Heights Collaborative (UHC) held a red carpet event at Allen Hall on UB's South Campus to celebrate the release of a marketing video that promoted the Heights as "unique, diverse and affordable." UHC has a vision: "A University Heights neighborhood that is safe and has a vibrant business district utilizing and revitalizing walkability, diversity, affordable housing stock and green space where people desire to live." After the showing, some attendees mentioned concerns regarding the high crime rate and deteriorating homes in the area.

"Too little, too late?"

Although it was unclear what prompted the "Tenant Rights" meeting Monday, Attorney Francis C. Amendola said there has been an increase in complaints from UB students about their landlords.

Life in the Heights

A carbon monoxide leak. Faulty electrical wiring. A ceiling on the verge of collapse. Missing landlords. In the last week, five students have had to evacuate their University Heights homes. During Saturday's housing blitz, a student living on Heath Street left her house so Buffalo City inspectors could immediately fix a potentially fatal carbon monoxide leak. Last Wednesday, four students vacated their Englewood Avenue home so inspectors could fix faulty electric wiring, which could have caused electrocution or a fire. In all of these instances, the landlords are to blame and hard to reach. On Saturday, Dan Ryan, director of off-campus student relations; Gary Ziolkowski, a City of Buffalo chief building inspector; and two other city building inspectors evaluated the homes on Heath Street.

A sump pump hose snakes out of a broken basement window. That house's foundation is cracked. This is the reality to the residents of 195 Englewood Ave. Last Saturday, UB had its second Housing Blitz of the 2012-13 academic year.
