Bulls softball takes one from No. 1

On paper, it looked like a perfect opportunity for the UB softball team to make its mark on the Mid-American Conference - a doubleheader against the number one team in the MAC, the Central Michigan Chippewas.The Bulls had an auspicious start to the day, defeating CMU 2-0, but the second game did not turn out quite the same way.The Chippewas (20-10 overall, 10-2 MAC) are perennial favorites to win the MAC and were even able to beat one of the premier teams in the NCAA when they beat the University of Michigan Wolverines on Apr.

Bulls baseball swept by RedHawks

UB baseball dropped all three games of a three-game weekend series at Miami (Ohio) over the weekend.The first game saw a final score of 10-1, while the Bulls dropped game two 6-5 and lost the third game 8-5.

In my humble opinion...

Being a sports fan means that I have opinions on happenings in the sports world. Sports fans will find ways to unite and share ideas - whether using the Internet, sports talk radio, or in the local bar over a beer or two or even 10.These are some of the musings and opinions I've formed through conversations with my own group of sports-crazed misfits and miscreants:In my humble opinion, as much as college basketball is exciting to watch, give me the NBA.

Ups and downs

The UB women's tennis team split home matches this weekend against two Mid-American Conference rivals, notching a 5-2 victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies but falling to the Western Michigan Broncos 6-1.On Friday, despite losing the doubles point early, the Bulls (7-4 overall, 3-3 MAC) used their fine singles play to loft them to victory over the Huskies (5-7 overall, 1-4 MAC) at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville.In tandem play, the number one duo of Andreea Novaceanu and Kristen Ortman defeated the Huskies' top pairing of Ivonne Andrade and Christy Svetlic by the score of 8-5.

Softball splits series at Kent State

After a rain-soaked Sunday postponement in Kent, Ohio, the University at Buffalo softball team (7-21 overall, 3-4 Mid-American Conference) split a Monday make-up doubleheader against the Kent State Golden Flashes (15-13 overall, 3-2 MAC).The Bulls lost the first game in a 1-0 nail biter, but were able to rebound and win the second game by the score of 6-4, led by homeruns by two of UB's seniors, Ann Magur and Melissa Pace.

Softball splits doubleheader at Eastern Michigan

The University at Buffalo softball team (6-20 overall, 2-3 MAC) looked to continue its recent string of good pitching on Wednesday in a doubleheader against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (6-7 overall, 3-1 MAC).They did just that as they allowed only three runs in the first game, a 3-1 loss, but were able to roar back in the second game, winning a 9-0 mercy decision behind a complete game shutout by sophomore pitcher Sophie Barstad and a 4-for-4, five-RBI performance by senior slugger Ann Magur."Our pitchers have been tremendous all season.

Baseball teams wins four of five on marathon weekend

Playing five games in three days is tough, but the University at Buffalo baseball team (9-10) was able to take four of them over the long weekend: one against the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers (4-10) and three more in a sweep of the Navy Midshipmen (3-15-1).FridayOn Friday, the Bulls split a doubleheader with UMBC on their home turf at Baseball Factory Field, winning the opener by the score of 8-5, and losing the nightcap 5-3, despite two home runs by UB shortstop Joe Mihalics.Buffalo was able to get its offense rolling early in the first game, as back-to-back doubles by Mihalics and junior first baseman James Kingsley opened up a 1-0 lead.

Bulls baseball hopes to bounce back

There is only one word to describe the 2005 University at Buffalo baseball team: anxious.The Bulls are anxious on the field to make up for a 15-39 finish in the 2004 campaign - dead last in the Mid-American Conference.Anxious to get the team's first win after a 0-6 start, UB has hope for a lucky seventh game of the season.Even after a rocky start, coaches and players alike are maintaining a positive attitude that there is plenty to be excited about with this team, and that the only direction to go is up."We're going to come out and win more than we did last year - we feel that we have our best team yet in the five years we've been in the program," said Bulls' head coach Bill Breene.

Tennis players adjust to life in the States

This is part two in a two-part series on international tennis players at UB.Many people can't imagine how difficult it is to move to a foreign country - a place away from close family, friends, and other loved ones.However Buffalo, known affectionately by many as the "Ruff Buff," has proven to be the opposite.
