UBmail will switch from Google to Microsoft Exchange Online

UBmail will completely transition to Microsoft Exchange Online within the next three-to-four years for both students and faculty, according to J. Brice Bible, vice president and chief information officer for UBIT.

“We are very optimistic about the university’s ability to safely deliver the majority of courses in person this fall, given the tremendous progress being made against COVID-19,” vice provost for academic affairs Graham Hamill said.

UB plans for mostly in-person classes in the fall

Roughly 84% of UB’s classes will have an in-person component next semester, according to the Office of the Registrar’s website. That compares to just 16% of classes that will be offered remotely.

In a phone call with New York college students, Schumer emphasized the need for students to unite around $50,000 of student loan cancellation and mount a pressure campaign on President Biden.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer outlined his plan to cancel $50,000 worth of federal student loans for individual borrowers on a phone call with New York college students Wednesday.

UB has also purchased $1.8 million worth of personal protective equipment, hand sanitizer, air purifying equipment and other supplies to slow the spread of the virus on campus.

UB has spent $12.4 million on its pandemic response

UB has spent $12.4 million on COVID-19-related expenses since the start of the pandemic, according to university spokesperson John DellaContrada. These expenses include testing, supplies and the school’s transition to online learning.

New York State higher education institutions are currently only required to mandate the measles, mumps and rubella vaccination, according to New York State Public Health Law Section 2165.

UB ‘not empowered’ to mandate COVID-19 vaccination for fall semester

UB is “not empowered” to require students to receive the COVID-19 vaccination in the fall, according to university spokesperson John DellaContrada. Instead, such requirements are mandated by New York State.

As of Tuesday, 103 of the 125 positive on-campus cases were detected through mandatory on-campus testing.

Cornel West spoke of love, solidarity and spirituality Thursday as the inaugural speaker of the UB Department of Surgery’s “Beyond the Knife” lecture series. The Harvard professor did not touch on his recent threat to depart from his position at the university.

UB officials urged students to “be cautious, prepare for hazardous road conditions and make all decisions with your personal safety in mind.”

UB remains open despite winter storm

UB students who were hoping for a snow day on Tuesday were left disappointed after an overnight storm that was expected to drop up to 12 inches of snow only left 7.9 inches as of this morning.

The soon-to-be annual lecture series, which commenced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent social justice movements, will focus on mitigating racism and inequity in health care.

Cornel West will kick off School of Medicine’s first annual anti-racism lecture series

Cornel West, a bestselling author most well-known for his anti-racism activism in the U.S., will speak via Zoom on Feb. 18 as part of the UB Department of Surgery’s newly launched “Beyond the Knife” lecture series.

The spring semester will commence on Monday, when students take classes remotely and in-person.
