After struggling in out-of-conference play, the softball team saw mixed results in its conference opener last weekend.The Bulls hosted four games against Bowling Green and Toledo to start off its divisional record for the year last weekend and went 1-3 over the four-game stretch.

Three wrestlers head to NCAA tourney

For the first time in the team's Division I history, Buffalo wrestling will be sending three grapplers ranked in the country's top 15 to the NCAA tournament.Senior heavyweight Harold Sherrell, senior 197-pounder Kyle Cerminara, and junior 133-pounder Mark Budd will all travel during the spring break to Oklahoma City, Okla., where they are looking to become All-Americans and National Champions.Although the tournament seedings for the event won't be released until Monday, aspirations are soaring."The NCAA Championships are probably one of the most exciting events in wrestling in the entire world," said head coach Jim Beichner.

Buffalo softball's weekend ended a little early thanks to a rainout versus Memphis, but not before the team split each of a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, defeating Memphis (5-3), losing to Notre Dame (5-4), and trading wins in two games against St.

High hopes for women's softball

New players, more offense, more speed, and the same defense as last year are the reasons the 2006 women's softball team is feeling the hype.Starting their season on Friday, the women of the Bulls softball team are looking to make an impact coming off of a 22-28 season in which they were 11-8 in the Mid-American Conference."Ultimately, we're hoping to make it to the MAC Championship and of course win it," said junior pitcher Sophie Barstad.

"Buffalo icon Robert Rich dies at 92, leaving legacy of charity and athletics"

UB alum and multi-billion-dollar entrepreneur Robert E. Rich passed away peacefully last Wednesday at the age of 92, leaving behind a catalog of achievements almost as impressive as his approach to life.Known as the father of UB's storied wrestling program, an avid football enthusiast and generous contributor, Rich's legacy in Western New York has not gone unnoticed."The individual contributions made by him are really quite extraordinary," said former UB president William Greiner, who knew Rich for more than 20 years.

Swimmers post a close loss on senior day

Parents showing baby pictures at a collegiate sporting event can be embarrassing. Luckily for the graduating seniors of the women's swimming and diving team, jumping into the pool fully clothed is sure to wash away some of that shame.On a day dedicated to the graduating seniors, the Bulls lost 163-135 to cross-state rival Cornell Saturday, but the preceding ceremony, which ended with the seniors ceremoniously jumping into their home pool with all of their clothes on, helped lighten the mood."It's bittersweet," said senior Olga Wojcik.

Bulls lose fourth straight

With four straight losses, three of them to conference-leading teams, the Bulls are setting themselves up for a difficult postseason filled with many road games.The first half Tuesday night's game versus Ball State saw four lead changes and six ties, but the Cardinals ended up with the halftime lead and continued on to a 67-60 victory over Buffalo.Ball State's win relied heavily on the shooting of forward Julien "Skip" Mills, who scored a game-high and career best 27 points.
