Catching up with Warde

As the UB football team traveled to Connecticut in a matchup with the Huskies, it was an opportunity for former athletic director Warde Manuel to take on his former school and reflect on the times he had while at Buffalo.

Sledding to Connecticut

Put on your hard hats - this game will be a physical battle. After a tough mid-week game, in which the football team was unable to finish offensive drives against Kent State (2-1, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) in a loss, Buffalo (1-2, 0-1 MAC) will now travel to Hartford, Conn.

"Led by Kowal, new-attitude Bulls end losing streak"

After six straight losses, it turned out all the Bulls needed was a new attitude and a dominant leader. The Bulls (2-6-1) brought both to the field Saturday when they hosted Albany (2-6) and came away with a 2-1 victory - their first win in the month of September. Buffalo had struggled mightily since starting the season 1-0-1, scoring only three goals in an 0-6 stretch stretch.

Women's soccer drops first MAC contest

The women's soccer team's offensive prowess has improved of late, but crucial mistakes late in games have been the squad's downfall. A late penalty kick provided the momentum for Ball State (4-3-2, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) to take control as the Bulls (2-6-1, 0-1 MAC) suffered their first MAC defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss on Friday at the Briner Sports Complex in Muncie, Ind. Like many of their losses during this season, the deciding blow occurred late - in the 80th minute.

Bulls volleyball drops two in conference tour of Ohio

After an exciting tournament win at home ended in a pumping dance party, the volleyball team could have ridden the good vibrations to victories in their first two Mid-American Conference games. There's a reason Footloose wasn't filmed in Ohio. Continued defensive woes led Buffalo (6-8, 0-2 MAC) to drop its first two conference games Thursday and Saturday against Ohio-based teams, Akron (8-6, 1-0 MAC) and Toledo (7-7, 1-1 MAC). The first game of the weekend resulted in a 3-0 sweep by Akron, while the Bulls pushed Toledo to four sets in their 3-1 loss. Not three days after junior libero Kelly Svoboda was named the MAC co-defensive player of the week, the Bulls found themselves in trouble against Akron.

It's only the start of the season, but the men and women's cross country teams are already showing some progress. The men's team triumphed again and came in first place for the second consecutive year with 28 points.

I'm cashin' out

Being outscored 139-0 seems a bit lopsided, but the Savannah State program sees it differently. To the national spotlight, the Tigers looked like a laughing stock, but they should be the ones laughing.

Wednesday night fight

Let the MAC games begin. After two weeks of playing non-conference opponents, the football team will finally get a chance to back up the comments made by senior defensive end Steven Means, who promised a Mid-American Conference championship before the season. The Bulls' (1-1) first conference opponent is Kent State (1-1). UB will showcase its talents in front of not only Buffalo, but the entire nation, as this game will be broadcast on ESPNU. This game marks the first time Buffalo has had a home game on national TV since 2009, when the Bulls beat the Golden Flashes 9-6.

Bulls' losing streak extends to four

The men's soccer team has possessed the ball well lately, but it has failed to put a tally in the win column in the past four games. The University of Detroit (2-3) traveled to UB Stadium to face the Bulls in the last game of Buffalo's four-game home stand on Friday.

Upperclassmen unable to dig Bulls out of Cleveland State troubles

The defense stood tall at the net, but the offense was absent again for the volleyball team at the Cleveland State Invitational over the weekend. The Bulls (3-6) were defeated in all three of their matches and only won three of 12 sets in the tournament. They opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Cleveland State (6-3). The Bulls won the first set 26-24, but were unable to top the Vikings, losing the final three sets of the game. "I thought we played our best match against Cleveland State," said head coach Todd Kress.

Declawed

From the opening kick off on Saturday night, the stars were out and shining brightly. They donned their normal fluorescent whites, with a noticeable shade of blue. Junior running back Branden Oliver and junior wide receiver Alex Neutz shone brightest for the Bulls (1-1), setting school Division I records as they routed FCS school Morgan State (1-1), 56-34, Saturday night at UB Stadium. Oliver did what he does best, pulverizing the Bears early and often.
