Greek Activities Suspended

Based on allegations related to a Greek letter organization at the University at Buffalo, all fraternity and sorority activities have been suspended, at least through Saturday, February 16, 2002.Students and national and local organization representatives are currently being advised of this action.

Student Privacy Rights

In the fallout of a tragedy, people often ask, "What went wrong?" "How could this have been prevented?" and "Who is responsible?" As authorities attempt to sort out these questions regarding last Sunday's driving disaster in Grand Island, it is unfortunately clear that concerns over the welfare of college students are not strictly confined to this region.At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a lawsuit filed in January over the April 10, 2000 suicide of sophomore Elizabeth Shin has brought attention to the controversial battle between protecting a student's privacy rights and the right of the parents to be kept informed of the safety of their child on campus.Shin's parents are suing MIT for $27 million for wrongful death, charging that MIT should at least have informed them of their daughter's unstable mental condition.

Dees Urges Students to Appreciate Diversity at Canisius

Civil right attorney Morris Dees spoke Tuesday at Canisius College as part of the school's celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., relaying a strong message of tolerance to college students, who should "understand that there are different rolls everyone should play."Dees is the chief council for the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit organization founded in 1971 that specializes in lawsuits across the country involving racial crimes and civil rights violations.He began by discussing his recent victory in a wrongful death trial against the Aryan Nations.

University Warns Students of Chicken Pox Outbreak

After six South Campus students were diagnosed last week with the Varicella virus, commonly known as chicken pox, the Student Health Center is taking steps to inform students and faculty about the outbreak and encourage them to get vaccinated.Frank Carnevale, clinical assistant professor of the Student Health Center, said chicken pox "occasionally occurs on college campuses in isolated cases" during this time of year.

Manplanet takes us Out of this World

Four men took the stage in brightly colored vinyl jumpsuits and the first few rows of the audience started chanting "Manplanet, Manplanet, Manplanet." Access to Education: A Global Perspective

As more individuals around the world pursue college degrees and the costs of state-supported education escalates, policy makers are left with the dilemma of determining how to cut costs without sacrificing access to education.An international conference in Africa on higher-education financing, made possible by a $130,000 grant to UB's Graduate School of Education from the Ford Foundation, will attempt to shed light on this growing predicament.The conference, which will be held March 24-28 in Dar es Salaam, is a collaborative effort between UB and the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania."In most African nations a huge demand for higher education is greatly outpacing the capacity of the tax systems to continue providing this higher education free of charge.
