Bush's Mangled Words to Be Added to Dictionary?

President George W. Bush's often laughable butchering of the English language has found some legitimacy in the dot-com world this week, as yourDictionary.com, the self-proclaimed "last word in words," has included the memorable "misunderestimate," "embetter" and "resignate," in their list of 2002's top words.This legitimization, while entertaining, is a dangerous precedent to set, as it implies that improper English is acceptable and that accuracy in speech is unimportant.

In the hopes of boosting interest in and providing financial assistance for Buffalo's only professional hockey team, the Student Association is sponsoring a night of Sabres, wings and partying for UB students of all ages.In a promotion titled "Save the Sabres," SA is selling tickets to the Feb.

Buffalo BanditsBuffalo's indoor lacrosse team went 1-1 over the weekend, falling from the ranks of the unbeaten against Toronto in a 17-13 loss Friday night at the Air Canada Center, then coming back with a convincing 23-17 win over Calgary Saturday night at the HSBC Arena.Friday's game was close, until Bandits goalie Corey Quinn took a five-minute major penalty for charging with the score 12-10 in favor of the Rock.

The Buffalo Public Schools, to reduce the number of uncertified teachers as well as recruit new ones, are offering bonuses of up to $10,200 over a period of three years to further the education of its teachers.

UB Devises Procedure for Students Called to Army Reserves

As tensions mount between the United States and Iraq, UB officials are developing official plans for how the university will secure the enrollment and handle the financial situation of Army reservists who may be called into active service.According to Joanne Plunkett, director of UB's Student Response Center, the university is aware that student reservists could be called to service any day."We have started getting calls from students who know they will be called soon, and since they are already in classes, they want to know whether to drop the classes," Plunkett said.

Wooing With Words

In an effort to celebrate the work of local high school poets and gauge the interest of prospective UB applicants, the College of Arts and Sciences recently announced the start of an annual contest with cash prizes.UB Artist in Residence Carl Dennis, whose book "Practical Gods" earned the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, will judge the contest.CAS Dean Uday Sukhatme, originator of the poetry contest, ran a similar program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
