University Police Arrest UB Alumnus in Goodyear Assault

Investigators have arrested Michael E. Hicks, 22, of Rochester, for allegedly assaulting Michal Kociuba, a freshman exercise science major, early Sunday morning on South Campus, University Police announced Tuesday afternoon. Kociuba was assaulted in the Goodyear Residence Hall lobby in an apparently unprovoked attack, according to UPD Chief of Police Gerald W.

"Today In UB History: April 7, 2004"

As the world looks toward Athens and the 2004 summer Olympics, some U.S. Olympic swimmers are looking toward UB for the latest in high-tech swimwear. Two UB professors from the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, along with the men's swimming coach, have designed a new swimsuit called the "Turbulator" that increases swimming speed by decreasing drag. Professors David Pendergast and Joseph Mollendorf and men's swim coach Albert Termin teamed up with swimwear company TYR to design, create and distribute the new suit. "TYR were partners in this with us providing the basic design and them making the actual suit," the two professors stated in a joint email.

Breaking the Rules of Gender and Sexuality

Queer youths are out there and ready to be heard. Last Monday, "Reteaching Gender and Sexuality," a national educational campaign that promotes the discussion of issues that queer youths face in today's society, came to the Center for the Arts. The event, which was organized by Wellness Education Services and the School of Social Work at the University at Buffalo, intended to spread awareness of LGBTQ issues to as many people as possible. Organizers of the event also wanted to include members of the Buffalo community, like high school teachers and social workers, who wanted to learn and participate in conversations dealing with gender and sexuality issues. "We wanted to offer new conversation around the issues of gender sexuality," said Jon Hurst, a first-year master's student in the higher education administration program.

UB Council Convenes

On Monday morning, the UB Council met for the first time since Satish K. Tripathi was recommended to be UB's 15th president. Chairman Jeremy Jacobs spearheaded the meeting, which addressed the recommendation of Officer in Charge Tripathi, the 2011 Norton Medal nomination, and the resolution in support of tuition policy and reforms from SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. Misusing prescription amphetamine medications such as Adderall is a widespread problem at UB, a survey reveals, with nearly one-third of UB students stating that they have used the drug non-medically.

While most people within the university community will be watching the war with Iraq unfold on television, a number of UB students recently learned they would witness the events of war from the front lines. According to Joanne Plunkett, associate vice provost and director of the Student Response Center, 32 UB student reservists have been called into active duty in Iraq. "That's what I signed up for," said Jason Toy, a junior business major and senior airman.
