The Buffalo Botanical Gardens wrapped up its seventh annual Lumagination display this Tuesday, breaking previous attendance records with help from UB students. During Lumagination, colored lights from across the spectrum transform the plant life of the Gardens.
Grande opened the show with that giant projection screen and her talented dancers, including twins Brian and Scott Nicholson. The superb performance of “Be Alright” replicated Madonna’s ‘80s classic, “Vogue,” and set the standard for the rest of the show’s well-choreographed numbers.
Time is frigidly moving along as the Buffalo weather has seen its ups and downs. Your class workload may be increasing in the next few weeks but the Queen City will always keep you steady with great live music. This week, Ariana Grande leads the mix as funk & rap also make their rounds to our neck of the woods.

UB professor David Schmid said it has been a long time since the U.S. had a president that “knows so little about the arts as Trump.” President Donald Trump has threatened to defund the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) completely since entering the Oval Office. Without these two agencies, funding for the arts in public institutions would be cut and students would have to pay for private art lessons.
Ebony G. Patterson uses glamorous accents such as glitter and sparkles to draw viewers into the ideas of gender and death. Patterson, a Jamaican-born artist, created Dead Treez, an intricate exhibit that draws in viewers through lustrous, vivid hues. Patterson’s work opened on Thursday evening in the first floor wing of the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts. The exhibit’s artwork is inspired by Jamaican-style dancehalls.
Music is a passionate art, fueled by the emotions of the artists who wrote each song. This week’s Spectrum playlist is aimed toward spicing up your love life by helping you get “in the mood.”
Brian Jones* was browsing Reddit’s UB page looking for single girls to talk to. Once he found a cute girl, he tried to meet up with her in person. Jones, a senior economics major, would try to set up dates in person, but every time he tried to meet her in person, she canceled last minute.
Music fans this week can pick from gigs such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and get down to the soulfulness of singer Babyface. Whichever sonic route you choose this week, letting loose to these artists will make you forget your scholarly concerns.
A circle of 15 poles stand in the Student Union flag room. Each pole has signs with identifying statements, such as “I believe in a higher power,” “I identify with no/another political party” and “I live with a disability or chronic illness.”
