Athletes of the Week
Mike Lambert of the football team was named male athlete of the week for his superb play in Saturday's 31-17 loss to Western Michigan. Lambert intercepted one pass and ran it back 87 yards and defensed three other passes on the day.
Women's tennis star Kristen Ortman was given the honor of female athlete of the week. Ortman, who is a freshmen, played the one spot in place of the injured Karen Maynard in UB's 7-0 victory over local rival Canisius. Ortman defeated Canisius' Anne Nguyen 6-1, 6-3 and also won in doubles action.
Crew
University at Buffalo opened the crew season with Saturday's Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh, Pa. UB got strong performances from all four of its entries with the varsity eight boat winning its race and the novice four crew finishing second in its race by a slim margin.
