There's something about folk music that induces a sense of peace in the listener. Buffalo-based Michael Meldrum's newest album is of that nature; it is a collection of heartfelt lyrics, unadulterated acoustic guitar, and melodious harmonica that breathes calmness into its listeners.
An acclaimed producer, singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Meldrum has compiled over three decades of material into moving compositions with his debut album "Open Ended Question."
"Open Ended Question" is a "who's who" ensemble of the Western New York music scene. Alison Pipitone (The Alison Pipitone Band) and solo artist Ani DiFranco contribute their talents to complement Meldrum's music and lyrics.
In the first track on the album, "Forget It," Meldrum gives the local music crowd something they can relate to in the chorus.
"I feel as empty as your streets below/Buffalo snow, aw, let me go/Come on autumn leaves fall tired and slow/I think I'll let you write my song," he sings.
Uplifting lyrics and an up-tempo beat make up the title track. Using an arrangement of acoustic guitar, fiddle and harmonica, the emotions are beautifully conveyed by the lyrics.
Co-producer Ani DiFranco lends her exceptional vocals in "Please Say Yes." DiFranco's voice elevates Meldrum's thoughtful lyrics to another plateau of grace.
"Please say yes to me tonight/I will lie down by you easy/We can wipe our tears away/Shake the fear and sorrow/Baby, we'll be born again tonight," DiFranco sings.
Michael Meldrum and company do not hold anything back, and by doing so they showcase their extraordinary talent. An engaging and meditative album, "Open Ended Question" makes for a relaxing listen.
