Food column: ‘The City of Wings: Duff’s Version’

Before packing up my bags and leaving my Long Island hometown to go to UB, I’d only ever heard of the glorious and mouth-watering dish that puts Buffalo on the map: Buffalo wings. 

Let’s make this clear, I am no wing connoisseur. All I know is that if you’re eating them right, the wings should be stripped to the bone (if you know, you know). But since moving to the city that made them famous, I’ve had wings of all kinds at several different establishments. And like any other academic weapon on a budget, I’m looking for two things at any wing establishment: quality and affordability. 

Every Buffalonian has their opinion about what restaurant serves the best wings, but if the Yelp reviews are to be believed, there is a most popular establishment: Duff’s Famous Wings. 

Duff’s has five locations scattered throughout the Buffalo area (plus a sixth in Southlake, Texas). But if you’re a UB student, the closest one would probably be the original Duff’s on Sheridan Drive, a 10-minute drive from campus.

Although the inside of the establishment reminded me of the basement of a frat house and wasn’t something I enjoyed, perhaps it’ll be the spot where you and your besties can hang out and feast.

If you’re a gherkin lover, try the fried pickles ($8.99) as an appetizer. They were covered in a thick layer of batter but had a moist and crunchy texture. Then, if you’re craving a cheesy delight, try the mozzarella sticks ($8.99). Sure, it’s not particularly original, but you truly can’t go wrong with fried finger food.

And now for the main course: Duff’s Famous Wings. If you really enjoy spicy foods and don’t whine about it like me, then please indulge in the medium wings ($30.99 for a 20 pack), which were a little hotter than “medium” might suggest. If you’re like me and medium isn’t your vibe, then try the BBQ wings. Both were crispy and full of flavor. 

If you’re a fan of the nostalgic staple of cafeteria lunches, a bite of Duff’s classic side fries will instantly remind you of your childhood days. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not particularly bad. If you are an onion ring stan, Duff’s version will suffice.

Overall, the wings were quite enjoyable. But unlike what the Yelp reviews say, they’re not the best in Western New York. While the food and variety of locations make for a solid experience, it’s fair to say there are other contenders worthy of the No. 1 title.
