Partying is a rite of passage for college students. Embrace the stereotype, and do it well.
Twelve UB students told The Spectrum what songs they listen to that make the pregame more fun than the game.
Here’s what they said:
Miami — Will Smith
Although Buffalo is definitely not the city where the heat is on, it’s still a fun song.
One student said she likes the song because the chorus is very “girly pop.” Ultra feminine, bubbly and a little basic, “the song is fun to get ready to, and it’s catchy.”
Doses and Mimosas — Cherub
Released in 2012, “Doses and Mimosas” has remained a classic. It’s a must-know for incoming freshmen and anyone who loves a great beat.
“It feels very college,” one UB senior said. “It’s very euphoric, and it’s a great party song.”
Riff Off — “Pitch Perfect” Soundtrack
While untraditional, the “Riff Off” might have a lot of songs you’ll catch yourself singing along to. If your friend group loves to sing, this one’s for you.
One grad student said she likes when “everyone starts singing together. It feels like I’m making a memory.”
Plan B — Megan Thee Stallion
If you think you might see someone who ghosted you at the function, you’ll want to blast this at full volume. Megan Thee Stallion’s empowering lyrics will have you feeling ready to run for president.
“It makes me feel empowered as a woman, like I can slay the whole town, and I’m better than every man,” one student shared.
Star Spangled Hammered — Litty
One student shared that this song was a classic pregame song for his fraternity.
“We listened to it when we were pregaming, and everyone started breaking tables,” he recalled. “It was a fun memory.”
Bills Mafia, take note.
La Mama de la Mama — El Cherry Scom, CJ, and El Alfa
This Latin hit quickly energizes listeners with its increasing tempo. Its performance on the Global 200 was also rare for a Latin track.
“The bass gets me pumped, and I’m Hispanic, so that’s a plus,” one undergrad said.
Happy Now — Kygo and Sandro Cavazza
Sending positive vibes, “Happy Now” reminds one student of their spring break trip.
“My friends played it on the way to the airport when we went on spring break, so it reminds me of good times,” they said.
Where Them Girls At — David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida
“Cuz where they at?” asked a member of one UB fraternity. “The song also has a good beat, and the words are catchy.”
This song will have you in the mood to intermingle. Guetta’s lyrics about being “up in the party” will have you itching to go out and meet the rest of your friends — or someone new.
The Spins — Mac Miller
This song might be the 21st century’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel. The fast-paced lyrics will have you practicing in the car beforehand, but the energy is unbeatable.
“It’s a great song,” one junior shared. “Me and my friends know all the lyrics, and we love to play it.”
Rattlin’ Bog — The Irish Descendants
A drinking game and a song rolled into one, “Rattlin’ Bog” is the song to play when your Uber’s close and your drink is unfinished. Each person participating takes turns chugging their drink while the chorus rambles, breaking when the slower verses play.
“It started with my friend group,” one UB sophomore shared. “We were having our little hangout in the basement, and someone said, ‘Hey, get on this.’”
They’ve played it ever since.
SLUT ME OUT — NLE Choppa
A controversial fraternity classic that some find obnoxious and others essential, “SLUT ME OUT” undoubtedly has a bass-booming beat.
“I have to scream it every time I hear it,” one student said.
Since U Been Gone — Kelly Clarkson
One student listens to less popular party music for some variety.
“I want a song that’s not going to be played at a fraternity,” one student said. “‘Since U Been Gone’ is such a good song to belt out, and get a lot of frustration out.”
