The UB Bulls wrestling team placed seventh overall and had three wrestlers place in third at the Oklahoma Gold Tourney in Brockport, N.Y. on Saturday. Overall, Buffalo accumulated 70 points, a half point behind the sixth place finisher, Bloomsburg, and 113.5 points behind the first place finisher in Oklahoma.
Unseeded sophomore Mike Sebaaly rose up to the competition in the 125-pound class, defeating Army's Andy Henry 7-4. Sebaaly was defeated by the top ranked contender from Oklahoma, Bo Maynes, by a score of 12-4, but Sebaaly then won out as he cleaned out the consolation rounds to take third place in the class. Among those wins was an 8-7 victory over the No. 4 seed from Brockport State, Sal Cruz.
Also placing third in their weight classes were junior Garrett Bontempo and sophomore Kyle Cerminara. Both of them were some of UB's winningest wrestlers last season.
Bontempo entered in the 184-pound class seeded third. He won two-straight matches before being defeated by the No. 2 seed from Cleveland State, Gerald Harris. In the consolation rounds, Bontempo won out the rest of his matches to capture third.
Cerminara entered the 197-pound class seeded fifth. He lost one match to Ohio State's Anlon Talamantes, and earned third place in his class by cleaning up the consolation round.
Last year, Bontempo was 28-10 overall, while 4-1 in the MAC. Cerminara was 26-13, with a 5-0 record in the MAC, earning him a spot in the NCAA Championships as a freshman.
Junior Mike Trotta finished fourth in the 133-pound class, and Labe Black finished at fifth place in the 157-pound class.
