Gang Shootings Erupt on South Campus

Gunshots were exchanged on South Campus on Saturday after a chase involving two cars spilled into the Main-Bailey Lot and left one suspect wounded, according to John Grela, director of University Police.

Buffalo police believe the violence was an act of gang-retaliation for an incident that occurred in the city and that the shootings had nothing to do with the university, said Grela.

"This all took place as a result of an incident off-campus on Bailey Ave., between a group of people, and it spilled over onto the campus," he said. "None of the folks involved were students or affiliated with the university, and we believe it to be an isolated incident."

No arrests have been made as of yet, and Grela said the University Police are assisting the Buffalo Police Department with the on-going investigation.

In an unrelated incident, according to Grela, an unknown male seeking drugs broke into a room in the Richmond Quad last Thursday and held a student at gunpoint. When the suspect did not find any drugs, he stole an X-Box, some DVDs and CDs, Grela said.

University Police do not know the identity of the suspect, but they have a composite drawing based on the victim's description of the assailant.

Grela said he wants to remind students that they should be careful not to allow unknown persons to gain entrance to the complex without a swipe-card. He also said that students should report any suspicious activity by calling 645-2222.
