How to stay active (and sane) this winter break

YouTubers, free workout apps have made staying healthy during the pandemic a little less scary (for free!)

It’s not easy to get up when there are so many reasons to be down this holiday season. 

No matter how hard we try, that tray of cookies just keeps beckoning. But there is a way to get through winter; If we set aside just a little bit of our time, we can be healthier and most importantly, be our best selves.

The Spectrum compiled a list of free workout videos and apps to help you get up and moving this winter:

Yoga with Adrienne 

A YouTube yoga class with Adrienne is therapeutic for the body and the mind. She offers beginner classes along with more advanced positions to make us sweat. She targets specific muscles so you can choose what you want to work on. Her meditative practice and calming voice (along with her adorable dog) make for a great pandemic workout.

Nike Training Club

This app, available on both iOS and Android, offers tons of free workouts for every type of person, whether you’re into strength, endurance or just need some ‘ohms.’ You can log your workouts and since the app is guided by Nike Master Trainers, you know you’ll get a good sweat in without breaking the bank.

Tone It Up

These spunky gals have the energy we need to get through the holiday season and the wintertime blues. With hundreds of YouTube workouts and modifications for any level, you can rely on Karena and Katrina to lift you up. As a bonus, contributors share super easy, healthy recipes! 

AllTrails: Hike, Bike, & Run

This app, available on both iOS and Android, boasts over 100,000 trails on all sorts of terrain for every outdoor athlete. You can personalize your trail and share it with friends for a pandemic-friendly get together. Grab some snowshoes, a bike, running shoes (for those dry days) and a heavy coat – you’ll be sweating in no time. 

Hang Tight with Marcie

Marcie, a “personal trainer and fitness nutrition specialist” based in Atlanta, is getting followers moving with her quick YouTube workouts. Most take place right in her living room using body resistance, and only clock in at around ten minutes per session. 

J&J Official 7 Minute Workout

This free app, owned by Johnson & Johnson and available on both iOS and Android, hosts a library of dependable workouts for every level ranging from seven to 32 minutes. And since it was designed by distinguished exercise physiologist Chris Jordan, you can count on a sweat session that won’t hurt you!

Natacha Océane

Natacha’s YouTube channel is full of at-home workouts that get your heart pumping. Her page offers several playlists geared towards nutrition, exercise and health so you can get the full experience. Plus, she has a cool British accent!

POPSUGAR Fitness

This YouTube channel has limitless options for workouts and fitness, ranging from hip-hop and kickboxing to high-intensity interval training. They also offer yoga and barre classes of all sorts, each clocking in at around 30 minutes. Most workouts don’t require  equipment and are low-impact – meaning they won’t make your neighbors mad, which is always a plus.

InsightTimer

This isn’t a workout app, but it’s something we all need. InsightTimer provides free meditation sessions and audio to calm you down, recorded by everyone from famous yogis and medical professionals, to pianists and choruses, available on iOS and Android or a convenient web browser. You can also attend virtual events with speakers from around the world. With sessions lasting from four minutes to two hours, it’s suitable for any crazy schedule.
