Spectrum recommends: Best fall music

What to listen to when the seasons change

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are turning an array of reds and yellows and that seasonal depression hits you like a truck. Luckily, The Spectrum staff have arranged the perfect playlist for those fall feels.

“Summer Death” — Marietta

Move over brat summer, midwest emo autumn is upon us. As the title of the album suggests, summer is unfortunately over; but the bright side is you have the perfect album to keep you company. With Summer Death, you’ll find yourself feeling the true essence of the fall. The introspective and confessional lyrics blended with the twinkly guitar lines and melodies will leave you with a sense of nostalgia and longing. A perfect, bittersweet album for those autumn nights you’ll spend reminiscing about anything and everything. Have your flannels ready.

“There She Goes” — The La’s

Every fall vibe can be felt in this song. While you’re baking every pumpkin dessert, throw this song on for every cozy vibe imaginable. Gilmore Girls is emulated in this song and that’s all you need to know for this to be your next fall favorite.

“American Football” — American Football

If you’re looking for the perfect acoustic album to put you in that autumn mood as the seasons start to change, American Football’s self-titled album has everything you need. Everyone needs a little nostalgic stripped-back guitar like that of “Never Meant” or the aptly titled “The Summer Ends” to transport them back to childhood memories of crisp autumn air and simpler times. The album’s wistful tunes and moving lyricism are the perfect addition to your playlist this fall, especially if you have a tendency to get a little existential as the leaves start falling.

“Baby” — Donnie and Joe Emerson

Donnie and Joe Emerson conducted a symphony made for watching leaves fall off trees from a window or whilst taking a stroll. Slow tempo and low timbre naturally relax the body and mind, forcing one to appreciate the last moments of tolerable weather.

Unintentionally, the Emersons highlighted the recent harvest moons as their lyrics reminisced on being “out in the moonlight, looking up on the stars above.” Songs appreciating serenity and natural beauty welcome the fall season with open arms.

“this is what autumn feels like” — JVKE

From the artist who brought you 2023’s song of the summer comes a song perfect for a wet, gloomy day. The orchestral warmth and piano melody smoothly mesh with a pop-rap feel to emulate falling leaves, drizzly rain and a cozy blanket you’ll want to hide under until spring.
