UB Women’s Tennis (18-6, 5-4 MAC) defeated Western Michigan (11-12, 2-6 MAC) on Friday at West Hills Athletic Club, extending their win streak to two games before falling to Northern Illinois University (21-5, 7-2 MAC) by a score of 3-4 on Sunday. Results around the Mid-American Conference (MAC) secured the Bulls a spot in the MAC tournament, despite the split.
In the first matchup against Western Michigan, graduate student Jagmeet Kaur and freshman Blanca Berges fell 2-6, struggling to find their footing in the opening doubles matchup of the day. Senior Esmee Andresen and junior Deanne Choo followed, winning 6-3 at second doubles and continuing their season-long run of good form. The final doubles match saw UB’s freshman duo Marta Giglio and Liv Roestel narrowly defeated in a close 4-6 contest.
The singles matches proved much more successful for the Bulls. At first singles, Andresen claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory, while freshman Maria Glowacka secured second singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Kaur and sophomore Julia Laspro both won the following singles matches after a tough battle with three sets each, extending UB’s winning streak. Berges and Roestel also picked up wins, completing a clean sweep for the Bulls in singles matches. UB defeated the Broncos 6-1 on away courts.
On Sunday, UB played against Northern Illinois University at the Miller Tennis Center. It was a rough game for the Bulls. Both of the doubles matches ended in losses, with only a singles win for Andresen, Berges and Roestel. Despite their triumphs in singles play, it wasn’t enough to secure a win for UB, as they lost 3-4.
UB currently stands in second place in the East Division for the MAC conference. The Bulls will close out the regular season in an away game against Toledo (12-6, 5-3 MAC) on April 18th at 12p.m.
