We see it every year: fine dining, flowers and a fancy box of chocolates. It’s a classic strategy in the Valentine’s Day playbook, and it never fails to score. There’s just one problem: it’s too expensive. Love is in the air, but your bank account doesn't have to be.

Here are five frugal ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day without making your wallet weep.

Dinner and a movie at home

Commonly, couples enjoy a meal at a fancy restaurant on Valentine’s Day. Although gourmet food is special, it is one of the easiest ways to burn a hole through your pocket.

Instead of spending your savings on an overpriced meal, buy the ingredients to make it yourself. You’ll spend only a fraction of what you’d pay at a restaurant, and it'll taste even better because you and your sweetheart made it together.

After enjoying your home cooked masterpiece, cuddle up on the couch and stream your favorite romcom. This is a classic date night that will keep you and your wallet smiling.

Dollar Tree gift basket

Last year, gift baskets took the internet by storm, and this year has been no different. There’s something special about a colorful box that has been personalized with candies, accessories and self-care essentials.

The overwhelming display of gift baskets on social media has set expectations for many sweethearts this Valentine’s Day. Thankfully, you can easily create an inexpensive version in minutes.

Head to the nearest Dollar Tree and pick up your valentine’s favorites — heart-shaped chocolates, warm socks and a fluffy stuffed animal are always a safe bet. Add in some craft supplies or activity books for an extra touch. Arrange the items in a pink basket and place a thoughtful card in the center. Your valentine will appreciate the effort you put in, and you’ll love that you only spent $20.

Game night

Date ideas don’t need to be extravagant. In fact, you can have an intimate evening with your partner right at home.

Chances are, you have a deck of cards lying around. Spend the night battling it out in classic games like Rummy, Poker and Blackjack. A bit of lighthearted trash talk is bound to create an energetic spark.

If you’re looking to spice up your night even further, you can make up a game of your own. Since this is a completely free date night, the only numbers you will be tracking are your scores.

Thrifting

Many couples partake in a romantic excursion on Valentine’s Day, which can leave their bank account out of commission for months. It may not seem like it, but thrifting is a unique activity that couples can be amused by this Valentine’s Day.

Make your way to a local thrift store and see what you can find. Whether you’re sifting through clothing racks or examining old household items, you and your lover are destined to have a good laugh. This will make for a costless, but memorable Valentine’s Day.

Bake a sweet treat

It wouldn’t really be Valentine’s Day without dessert. Skip the pre-made baked goods this year, and make a final course you and your valentine won’t be able to resist.

Trader Joe's bakery aisle is filled with decadent mixes that can satisfy any holiday craving. With their endless wall of cookie, cake and brownie ingredients, you can certainly  make something delicious.

After your shopping trip, preheat your oven, throw on a romantic Spotify playlist and get to cheffing. The dessert will probably be gone by morning, but your bank account will stay intact.
