Letter to the Editor: ‘UB unequivocally stands against antisemitism’

Editor’s note: This letter remains in the condition in which it was sent.

Oct. 29, 2024

Recently, the UB Spectrum filed a story about an unsigned letter written by the Communist Student League – a group unaffiliated with UB.  Regrettably, the letter included antisemitic references and demands that were hurtful to members of the university community and which run counter to our values at the University at Buffalo.

Because of this, the university would like to take this opportunity to state again that UB unequivocally stands against antisemitism, Islamophobia, discrimination, harassment and intimidation of any form, and we condemn the antisemitic tactics and rhetoric expressed by this unaffiliated group in the strongest terms.

Although it is unclear if any UB students were involved in drafting or disseminating the messaging from the group, UB’s offices of Student Conduct and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion are reviewing the matter and will investigate any violations of UB’s Student Code of Conduct and policies prohibiting discrimination and harassment. Moreover, the university will uphold the protections afforded under Title VI and will take immediate action if the activities of any group or individual create a hostile environment for our students, faculty, staff or visitors.

I must also point out an unfortunate misrepresentation in the Spectrum article, which by describing the group as a “UB communist group” implied that the group had an affiliation with the university. To be clear, this group is not a recognized student group nor a UB-affiliated organization.

UB students can be assured that the Division of Student Life and our team of professionals across campus are available to provide resources for students who feel personally affected or threatened by hurtful speech or harassment. UB’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is also available to assist any students, faculty or staff who have been subjected to targeted harassment or other discriminatory actions.

The university is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Brian Hamluk
Vice President for Student Life
