Women’s tennis (11-1, 0-0 MAC) continued their impressive season as they swept Duquesne (2-5, 0-1 A-10) and Niagara (2-7, 0-0 MAAC) 7-0 on Friday at the Miller Tennis Center to advance to 11-1 on the season.
The Bulls built confidence early as sophomore Deane Choo and graduate student Jagmeet Kaur won 6-0 at third doubles, while fifth-year Azra Deniz Comlek and freshman Laura Koralnik collected a 6-3 win at second doubles. The doubles sweep was completed by fifth-year Ambre Amat and junior Esmee Andresen, who picked up a closer 7-5 win at first doubles.
The Bulls carried their momentum into singles, winning every match in straight sets. At first singles, Comlek got out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set but would get it tied up before advancing to win 7-6 and 7-5. At second singles, Kaur won a comfortable 6-0 and 6-4 while Koralnik picked up an easy 6-2, 6-0 win at three. The Bulls continued to dominate as Amat won 6-2, 6-1 at four; Andresen collected a 6-0, 6-2 win at five; and Choo picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at sixth.
The Bulls had no intentions of slowing down in their later matchup with Niagara. Once again, they would go on to win all three matchups at doubles to give them an early lead.
They continued winning in singles, once more taking every match in straight sets. At first singles, Comlek won a comfortable 6-3, 6-2. Koralnik continued to impress as a young talent on this team, collecting a 6-1, 6-1 win at two; while Andresen won 6-2, 7-5 at three; and Amat won 6-3, 6-1 at four. Senior Mariana Carvajal Torres won 6-4, 6-2 at five, and Choo finished with a 6-1, 6-1 win to comfortably sweep the Purple Eagles.
The Bulls will look to continue their impressive non-conference play in Florida next week for a pair of matches beginning this Friday against Hillsborough.
