The UB Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and the UB Center for Embodied Autonomy and Robotics are joining the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), which has been tasked with improving safety and trustworthiness by more closely analyzing the risks of the most advanced AI. The UB groups are two of over 200 organizations that have joined the AISIC alongside companies like Amazon, Google and Pfizer.
The AISIC was established on Feb. 8 under the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology following President Joe Biden’s 2023 executive order for privacy, AI security, civil rights and more.
UB’s involvement in the AISIC comes after New York State Governor Kathy Hochul’s Jan. 26 announcement that UB will host Empire AI, a consortium that places UB on the front lines of AI development. Empire AI will promote research, create jobs and use AI for the public good, according to a Jan. 8 article on the governor’s website.
As a member of AISIC, UB will continue to develop AI for research on speech and language processing in children, on how older adults and young children can spot scams and misinformation, and on a number of other issues including brain aneurysms, natural disasters and space travel. UB will also assist in producing public policy as AI becomes the peak of global technological advancement, according to a Feb. 14 press release.
