UB was ranked 20th among U.S. public institutions and 50th among U.S. universities in the 2021 QS World University Rankings released Thursday.

The second annual rankings were released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, one of the world’s largest higher education research companies.

UB ranked 16th among public institutions and 46th among U.S. universities in the 2020 rankings, so this year’s mark represents a slight dip for the Queen City’s largest public school.

U.S. schools were evaluated based on 17 metrics covering four broad groups, including employability, learning experience, diversity & internationalism and research.

UB was given a 54.7 overall score, which paces behind only Stony Brook (57.5) in the SUNY system and Columbia (75.1), NYU (73.3), Cornell (69.4), the University of Rochester (59.2) and SBU in New York State.

The university’s highest mark came in the learning experience (51-100 nationally) section, which evaluates the student-to-faculty ratio, Pell grant student graduation rates, how much a school spends on the average student and a school’s retention rate.

UB also earned a high score on the diversity & internationalism (No. 32 nationally) section, which measures a school’s proportion of international students, students’ ethnicity mix, the number of Fulbright recipients a school has, the ratio of undergraduates receiving Pell grants, the gender pay gap and faculty gender diversity.
