Brian Hamluk has been selected to serve as the university’s vice president for student life, effective June 1, President Satish Tripathi announced in an email to the UB community Monday.
As vice president for student life, Hamluk will oversee a $105 million budget and a 340-member staff across various university departments, units, programs and services, including Campus Living, Campus Dining and Shops, Health Services, Student Engagement and Counseling Services.
Hamluk will leave his position as associate dean of students at the University of Pittsburgh, a role he’s held since 2018. In that capacity, he oversaw and managed “the student affairs budget, human resources, payroll, facilities and administrative support functions,” according to the University of Pittsburgh’s website.
Hamluk has also served in other administrative capacities at the University of Pittsburgh, The George Washington University and Syracuse University.
The VP of student life position became vacant when A. Scott Weber became provost and executive vice president for academic affairs in January 2020. Christina Hernandez has served as interim vice president since Weber’s promotion. Tripathi thanked Hernandez in his announcement “for her leadership throughout the trying circumstances caused by the pandemic.”
Tripathi had previously announced in a Jan. 8 email to the UB community that the university had created a committee to select a new vice president for student life, with Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt serving as chair.
Alnutt announced on March 24 that his committee had narrowed its search to four finalists, with one being Hamluk. The committee held a public forum for each candidate between March 29 and April 1 before announcing its final decision Monday.
“An innovative leader in higher education, Brian is deeply committed to student success, and he keenly appreciates that keeping our students at the heart of everything we do is fundamental to UB’s mission of excellence,” Tripathi said in an email to the UB community. “I am confident that he will provide the exemplary leadership necessary to oversee the many UB programs that enhance the university experience for our students.”
