Volleyball wins second straight tournament; Women's soccer suffers first loss

Women’s soccer (4-1-1)

The Bulls were suffered their first loss of the season Friday, losing 5-0 against No. 3 Virginia Tech (8-0). The Buffalo ‘D’ allowed five goals without freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall in net – who was out with an injury. The Bulls didn’t allow any goals in their first five games.

Buffalo broke the program record for longest shutout streak in a season (482 minutes) 12 minutes into the game, but the streak ended at 493 minutes as Virginia Tech’s Murielle Tiernan scored. The team travels to Cornell University (2-0) next Friday for a 4 p.m. game.

Volleyball (7-3)

Buffalo won its second tournament in as many weekends as it was crowned University at Illinois Chicago Tournament champions. The Bulls defeated Western Illinois (1-8) in straight sets on Friday and defeated UIC (4-7) and Eastern Kentucky (8-5) on Saturday.

Junior outside hitter Tahleia Bishop was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for the second straight weekend. Bishop totaled a team-leading 53 kills over the three matches. Junior setter Marissa Prinzbach earned All-Tournament honors with 130 assists.

The team looks to ride its five-game win streak into Bloomington, Indiana when it competes in the Hoosier Classic. First match begins 7 p.m. Friday.

Men’s soccer (1-5)

The Bulls dropped both of their games against Big-4 rivals this weekend. Buffalo dropped its first match, 2-1, at Niagara (2-3) Friday. Buffalo trailed 2-0 before sophomore midfielder Russell Cicerone cut the Purple Eagles’ lead to one with a little more than 20 minutes remaining in the game. The Bulls failed to score again for the rest of the weekend. The Bulls dropped their Sunday match, 1-0, at Canisius (3-2).

Buffalo hosts Detroit (2-2-1) Friday at UB Stadium. The game is set for 7 p.m.
