With a new president and a new coach, the New York Knicks need to get out with the old and move on with the new. Stephon Marbury needs to go.
Once the Knicks do this, they will move away from their strong losing streak and begin building for the future.
There is no way the Knickerbockers will win the NBA Championship this year with Marbury on their team.
Without him, they hold every chance in the world.
What has Marbury brought to the Garden? Losses. Negative energy. I could go on forever.
Oh, and don't forget about the sexual charges and lawsuits against Madison Square Garden. In the summer of 2007, Marbury, along with then-coach Isaiah Thomas, were charged with sexual harassment accusations that resulted in an $11.6 million lawsuit.
Dropping the baggage known as Marbury would only help this team.
The one good thing Knicks fans can hope for by having him gone is that, like the other teams he used to play for, once he leaves, they win. Perhaps if the Knicks can him, they will start to see more wins in the standings.
The Knicks would have a whole new team, led by guard Jamal Crawford. It is a bit of a stretch to say that they would win a championship with Marbury out of the picture, but I don't think it is unreasonable to say they cannot be one of the eight teams in the East to make it to the playoffs.
It is not as if the Knicks have gotten farther then the first round with Marbury on the team anyways.
The Knicks are a rebuilding team, so why do they have this old timer playing with the biggest contract? The Knicks should trade him or cut him. I am not saying that Marbury will never play again, but his presence in New York is a cancer to the team.
There is no way having Marbury on the team is a good idea for the present or, most importantly, the future. The team has a solid roster that can be competitive now.
So why hasn't general manager Donnie Walsh already stepped up to the plate and cut Marbury? It may have something to do with the $21.9 million still left on his contract. Walsh should not be concerned with it. It was not his decision to take on Marbury, but instead it was the decision of Thomas, who has already been shown the door.
They're going to spend money on him anyways-whether they pay him to play on the team or if they buy him out. Buying him out will be money well spent when the team actually makes the postseason.
With Marbury gone, new head coach Mike D'Antoni can start building up his own team. You get a fresh start and no more dead weight.
You can't beat that.
With D'Antoni's picks of Chris Duhon and Anthony Roberson signed this year, fans will begin to see players who will be team-orientated, pass-first leaders rather than someone throwing up shots and playing selfishly.
Marbury's poor attitude brings the team and its fans down to the depths of hell with him.
There are rumors circulating that Marbury is in the best shape of his life. While they might be true, he has never been a team player. Marbury is only concerned about himself and that will never change.
He has always been a hard worker but has never been a team player.
In the past four-and-a-half years, the Knicks' middle name has been losing. If that's not enough to cut Marbury, I don't know what is.
