After a long wait, fans are finally privy to Jesca Hoop's first full-length album, Kismet. On Sept. 18, listeners will have the opportunity to purchase the ex-Mormon's offbeat lyrics and tunes. The CD features 11 songs, each bearing their own message to share.
Hoop's inspirations are taken from a vast array of musical influences, some of which are early folk songs, gospel and '20s to '40s jazz. Other obvious influences include performers like Cat Stevens, Bjork and Joni Mitchell.
Kismet includes songs both written and performed by Hoop. The CD itself invokes the relaxing feel and sound of old English folk. The eccentric instruments and harmonies that compose Hoop's Kismet help bring the listener closer to appreciating the lyrics within and better understand exactly where Hoop is coming from.
"Money" will bring a smile to listeners' faces and pleasantries to their ears. The poetic lyrics are deeply meaningful and take on a melancholy feeling. The song opens with powerful lines:
"Money/money makes the world go round/money/money'll make you change your sound," sings Hoop.
Hoop writes like a poet, each song portraying an opinion, emotion or dream felt by her expressive lyrical styling and sound. Fans looking for unique music with a positive message should give Hoop a shot.
