Ice custard happiness only a hop skip and a jump from south campus

Although the cool winds of fall will send chills down students' spines quicker than we'd like to imagine, there is still time to enjoy one of summer's best past times: brain freeze.

Rita's Frozen Desert Parlor, which made its debut to Buffalo earlier this August, is the perfect way to treat your taste buds. With its fresh, modern atmosphere, Rita's ambiance attracts customers with sharp reds and blues in the seating area. Outdoor benches are also available for those who would like to enjoy their treats in the summer breeze while they still can.

Located across from South Campus at 3476 Main Street in Buffalo. Rita's offers a unique selection of traditional custards, Italian ices, cream ices, gelati, "misto" and "blendi." With a changing selection of desserts, there are new menu options every day, thus living up to their slogan of "ice custard happiness."

Italian ice, a fat-free option, is made with real fruit and is smoother than fresh-fallen winter snow. Made fresh daily, Rita's is most famous for its Italian ice, which also serves as the inspiration for many of their other deserts.

Innovative treats such as "gelati," a layering of traditional custard atop your choice of Italian ice flavors, gelati brings the enjoyment of a favorite custard and favorite fruit drink into one perfect treat. Vanilla custard on top of mango Italian ice was a particularly delicious choice of this Spectrum staff writer.

Rita's also serves "misto," a blended version of gelati, and "blendi," custard blended with a choice of crushed cookie or wafer.

Rita's originality comes from their wide selection of flavorful combinations, which customers can sample before making their purchase. On any particular day, you can find their countertops stocked with flavors ranging from strawberry shortcake to blueberry cobbler, with exclusive flavors such as chocolate covered strawberries (an actual flavor, not an item).

Rita's "freshness policy" guarantees that no Italian ice will be sold that is more than 36 hours old-the reason they don't consistently offer the same menu every day.

Even with the exotic dessert options and wide range of flavors, Rita's have reasonable, competitive prices that resemble price ranges of other popular ice cream parlors around Buffalo.

Head in and try a sip of mango berry splash blendi or mint chip misto Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m., and Wednesday and Sunday until 10:00 p.m.
