Spotlight on excellence at ceremony

UB will commemorate this year's achievements of its professors and students on Thursday at the second annual Celebration of Academic Excellence, held at the Center for the Arts.

The event is a university-wide celebration of scholarly, research, and creative excellence.

"It is a recognition event that tries to address all constituent groups at the university," said William Regan, director of Special Events at UB.

Thursday's celebration is filled with activities geared for the entire campus community. The event begins at 1:30 p.m. with poster displays and art exhibits on the ground and first floor of the CFA.

"The poster displays are a myriad of examples of great work from all different corners of the university," Regan said.

According to Regan, the event also includes an interactive component that allows students to learn more about building their r?(c)sum?(c)s.

"The event goes over the ropes of how students can get involved," he said.

At 3:00 p.m. there will be a musical performance on the Main Stage of the CFA followed by the Celebration Ceremony that will recognize the faculty, staff, and student work at the university.

The ceremony will include remarks by President John B. Simpson, who will be presenting various Recognitions of Excellence. Both SUNY and UB professors will be honored with four different awards for excellence.

The awards include the SUNY chancellor's awards for faculty and professional staff, awards for outstanding contributions to international education, excellence in teaching awards for graduate teaching assistants, and outstanding undergraduate research and scholarship awards.

"There will be entertainment from (the cast of) "Merrily We Roll Along" throughout the ceremony," Regan said.

During the reception immediately following the ceremony, free t-shirts will be available for students.

"Registration is free and we want students to come," Regan said. "Come out and support colleagues and friends. Everyone at this university probably knows someone who will be acknowledged at the event."

Last year around 500 people attended the event. Regan hopes more will attend this year.

"We would like more people to come and see what their peers are doing and what they should be doing to get the most out of their undergraduate careers," he said.
