Porter resident returns home after fall

After spending six days at the Erie County Medical Center, the Porter Quad resident who fell out of his fourth-floor dorm room was released in good condition, according to University Police.

The UB student, whose name has not been released, fell 40 feet from his window during the early hours of April 1 and was admitted to ECMC in critical condition. After spending time in the intensive care unit, his condition continued to improve throughout the week and he was eventually released.

"The student was released by Thursday," said John Grela, director of Public Safety at UB. "He is currently rehabilitating at home and not attending classes."

What exactly happened on that Saturday morning is still in question but police officials have ruled out foul play and have closed the investigation.

"I do not believe it was any foul play or any intentional act by anyone, it was accidental," Grela said.

According to Grela, off-campus alcohol use may have been a contributing factor in the incident. He said he believes the student was underage but will not face charges because no evidence of alcohol was found in the dorm room.

The name of the student was not released because there was no crime committed.

"Normally we do not release that type of information," he said. "It is required by law to release names of only people who are arrested."

The dorm room window was rumored to have been a focus of the investigation, but according to Grela, the resident hall room and windows were not determined to be factors in the incident.

"Consumption of alcohol leads to problems," Grela said. "It is important to drink in moderation not only for students but adults as well. You are responsible for your own actions."
