Is studying at home a no-go, and has a long night at the library got you down? Strong addictive stimulants could be the answer. Caf?(c) 59 not only offers a wide variety of coffees and teas, but also an expanded menu, and Internet access.
Residing on the corner of Allen Street and Franklin Avenue, Caf?(c) 59's door is located a few window panes and doorways from the corner, next to an empty venue, eager for inhabitance.
Unfortunately, for any small business looking for a new space, but fortunately for the business located next door, Caf?(c) 59 is taking advantage of the legroom by expanding their dining area.
Originally a coffee shop, Caf?(c) 59 has opted to stay away from the stereotypical Coffee Bean-type coffee shops by adding a uniquely rare menu to their already vast selection of hot beverages.
Initially a vegan and vegetarian menu when they first opened, the owner, Leon Rung, felt that expanding the menu from primarily vegetarian would boost business.
"It's hard to convince business people that aren't vegetarian to eat at a vegetarian-style restaurant," Rung said. "But vegetarians always have to compromise, so we kept our menu varied."
Offering an abundance of sandwiches such as a tuna melt to die for, chicken breast, and "Queen City" eggplant, Caf?(c) 59 prevents their sandwiches from straying to the norm by presenting an array of unique condiments and ingredients.
"We offer the same sub rolls as everyone else," Leon said. "But we put field greens instead of ordinary iceberg or romaine lettuce on our sandwiches."
A regular turkey sandwich is adorned with marinated zucchini, field greens, onion, and balsamic vinaigrette. The chicken salad sandwich comes with dried cherries, sage, and field greens. The Portobello mushroom sandwich is festooned with gorgonzola cheese, field greens, onion, and sweet pepper pesto.
Aside from Caf?(c) 59's extensive and exotic sandwich menu, they also offer the make-your-own-salad option minus the conventional salad bar. Upon walking through the door the customer is presented with a stand holding cards with all the ingredients a salad could possibly posses. The ingredients include vegetables such as pepperoncini, marinated zucchini or roasted garlic cloves. There are also meats, fruits and nuts, cheeses, and dressings that would make a salad connoisseur's mouth water.
This extensive lunch menu is the reason for the necessary expansion of the eating area. The addition of an extended breakfast menu is the basis for an extended kitchen as well.
Another motive for the extension is the Internet access. There are a few computers on location and a wireless connection that keep computer geeks coming back for more.
Located at 59 Allen St., Caf?(c) 59 looks forward to a newly extended dining area by May 1.
