Comprehensive fee hiked for next fall

UB has proposed an increase of $41 per semester in the Comprehensive Fee for undergraduate students and $30.50 per semester for graduate students, according to a March 18 memo from the Office of Student Affairs.

The increase is necessary in order for UB to continue to offer its current programs and services, according to the memo. The fee includes technology, student health, transportation and parking, campus life, transcripts, debt services, and intercollegiate athletics and intramural services.

The proposed $11.50 hike to the part of the fee that pays for transportation is the largest increase out of the seven affected areas.

For transportation, the increase would go towards supporting costs, to the current bus contract and parking lot maintenance. To improve parking lots, UB officials have proposed to continue maintenance on the areas of snow removal, lighting, repaving, and repainting lines in 41 lots between the North and South campuses, according to the memo.

A 47 percent increase to the bus contract is also projected for 2005-2006, which the report states is due to the increased hourly cost per bus to provide the same level of service. The memo also states that since the fall of 2003, there has been a steady increase in the number of students who use the bus system.

Other areas affected include intercollegiate athletics, which would increase by $10.50 per student; health services by $8; technology by $7; and campus life by $4.
