Bulls Come Up Short in Weekend Road Trip

Buffalo falls victim to Toledo and Eastern Michigan

With the regular season winding down and the Mid-American Conference Championships right around the corner, UB's women's tennis team was looking to end on a high note on their weekend road trip, but unfortunately came home with a pair of goose eggs.

Sitting at the bottom of the Mid-American Conference standings, Buffalo was looking to make some noise before the MAC Championships that begin this Thursday.

Last Friday Buffalo squared off against Toledo in what was a very winnable match for the Bulls, as Toledo (3-15, 1-7 MAC) was riding a 14 match-losing streak. That wasn't how the cookie crumbled for Toledo as the Rockets claimed a 4-3 win over UB.

Toledo started off strong and took the doubles point by scoring victories in two of the three matches. Buffalo's lone doubles victory came when the duo of Michelle Kollarava and Katrin Fischer defeated Daniella Moran and Bestsy Hoffman 8-3.

In singles play, Toledo took the first two matches as Myriam Cueva defeated Buffalo's Miglena Nenova (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Monica Ribero won by default, which proved to make the difference in the end.

Buffalo answered right back as Katrin Fischer won easily in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) over Jen Meister and finally put UB on the board down 3-1. However, Toledo took the next match as Daniella Moran defeated Lisa Wittman 6-4, 6-3.

UB did not go down quietly as the Bulls took the final two matches of singles play with wins by Michelle Kollarava and Onessa Williams. Kollarava won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) over Toledo's Claire Smalley. Williams easily defeated Betsy Hoffman in two sets 6-2. 6-3.

The next stop for Buffao pitted the Bulls against the MAC powerhouse Eastern Michigan University Eagles at Ypsilanti, MI. The Bulls had their hands full against EMU, as the Eagles shut out Buffalo 7-0 and improved to 14-5 and 7-2 in the MAC.

In doubles play, UB's top duo of Nenova and Kristen Ortman lost to EMU's duo of Victoria Domina and Ying Kansuthi 8-4. Next up was UB's Lisa Wittman and Sheri Ugowski hoping to gain some momentum for Buffalo but easily defeated 8-0 by Jessica Loose and Malia Lincaru. The duo of Kollarova and Fischer did not fair much better as they lost 8-2 in their match.

Entering singles play down 1-0, Buffalo would be once again with Ortman and would bump up players to accommodate for the gap in the number two slot.

The Eagles took all six singles matches with ease as every match went only two sets. In the number one slot, Nenova bowed out to EMU's Domina 6-2, 6-1 and Fischer, who moved up to the number two slot, was defeated by Amalia Lincaru 6-1, 6-0.

EMU's Kansuthi defeated Lisa Wittman at the number three match with ease 6-1, 6-0 and Sheri Ugowski fell to EMU's Loose 6-1, 6-1 in the number four match.

At the five and six slots, UB's Onessa Williams and Erica Zielinski didn't fare any better as they lost to EMU's Kendra Clark (6-0, 6-0) and Laura Fernandez (6-0, 6-1) respectively.

Next up for Buffalo is the MAC Championships where they will enter the as the number nine seed and will have a rematch with eighth seed Toledo. The match is set to start at 10 a.m. this Thursday.
