After four rounds of voting, Adam Sherlip, a business administration and communication major, was elected to the position of speaker of the Student Association Assembly for the 2003-04 school year at Tuesday's assembly meeting.
In the final vote, Sherlip, the current secretary of the Assembly, defeated both Victoria Boone, a political science and sociology major, and John Lee Jr., a sociology major, by a margin of 10 to 6 to 3.
Sherlip was the only candidate to distribute a flyer stating his agenda and a resume. The agenda called for requiring prospective Student-Wide Judiciary justices to speak to the Assembly prior to the confirmation of their appointments, passing "efficient resolutions," increasing student participation in the Assembly, enforcing a "strict attendance policy" for Assembly members and setting a regular time for Assembly meetings prior to the start of the fall semester.
Sherlip said there is more to the position of speaker than just talking at the meetings.
"Basically, you pass referenda, join together the SA as a group to show the opinion of students and address viewpoints to the students and administration," said Sherlip.
Sherlip said the Faculty Student Association needs to ensure that the cost of food on campus is more reasonable. He also suggested a need to improve the condition of the dining halls.
"The FSA is definitely a top concern," Sherlip said. "I want the FSA Committee to be very proactive."
The multiple voting sessions were necessary because of a rule stipulating that the winning candidate has a majority of votes. The first vote eliminated Russell Monti, a student in the school of management.
The second vote ended with Boone and Robert Batdorf, a civil engineering major, tied for last, requiring a third vote, which pitted Boone against Sherlip and Lee in the final round of voting.
