Buffalo Bandits
Buffalo's indoor lacrosse team went 1-1 over the weekend, falling from the ranks of the unbeaten against Toronto in a 17-13 loss Friday night at the Air Canada Center, then coming back with a convincing 23-17 win over Calgary Saturday night at the HSBC Arena.
Friday's game was close, until Bandits goalie Corey Quinn took a five-minute major penalty for charging with the score 12-10 in favor of the Rock. Quinn came out of his crease to hit a defenseless Glenn Clark, who was looking over his shoulder for a pass from Toronto goalie Anthony Cosmo. The Rock put the game away by scoring two goals on the power play.
With the outcome decided, and Buffalo beginning to take liberties with their opponents, Bandits head coach Darris Kilgour was seen having a shouting match with Rock owner Brad Watters, who was sitting in the first row behind the Buffalo bench. After the game, Buffalo defenseman Andy Ogilvie dropped his gloves and helmet to challenge any Rock player to a fight in the center face-off circle. None obliged.
Saturday, John Tavares tied a Bandits team record with seven goals in the win over Calgary.
Buffalo sits in second place in the Central division with a 4-1 record. The team travels to play first-place Columbus (5-1) on Saturday. The re-match with Toronto, which promises to be a physical tilt, is the team's next home game, Feb. 8.
UB's wrestling squad was unable to get anything going early on against the highly touted Kent State team, who are ranked 24th by "Wrestling Mall" magazine and wound up falling to the flashes by a score of 22-9.
The win at Buffalo brought Kent State's record to 11-2 overall with an impressive 3-0 record in the MAC.
The UB men's and women's track and field teams placed second to host Cornell in a five-way meet Saturday afternoon in Ithaca. The UB men scored 159.50 points, just behind Cornell's 173. UB's women's squad scored 140 points to finish behind the Big Red's 269.50 total. Colgate, Ithaca and Binghamton rounded out the field in both competitions.
Two UB records were set and another was tied. Steve Esler set a new record for points in a pentathlon and won the event. Biaunca McFarland also broke her school record in the triple jump, winning the event. Faith Thompson tied her school record in the weight throw, winning the event in the process.
