Women's Basketball
Cheryl Dozier, the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bulls women's basketball team, has announced four early recruits for the 2003-04 class. The class contains guards Antionetta Young (Bessemer, AL/Jess Lanier), Dina Atanas (Brantford, Ontario/St. John's College), Kelly Calderone (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) and Belinda Gibb (Perth, Australia/Willetton).
Young is perhaps the most highly touted of the four, averaging 25 points, ten boards, three assists, and three steals a game last season. The Bulls also obtained the true point guard they have been searching for since the departure of Virginia Jennings in Atanas. Atanas was rated the number one player in Ontario by the Stars of Ontario scouting service when she averaged 14 points, four rebounds, and eight assists during her senior season at St. John's College in Brantford, Ontario.
"I feel very strongly that we just fulfilled two of our needs we will have next year, including the need for athleticism and for a true point guard," said Dozier. "This is a class of difference-makers - of student-athletes who can come in and really make an immediate impact in our program. The fit of these four players with the rest of the members of our team was apparent on their campus visits, and we feel strongly that they'll all make an easy transition and immediately help our program."
Wrestling
The Buffalo Bulls wrestling squad competed in the Mat Town USA Tournament on Saturday, coming out with a seventh place finish out of ten teams with 73.5 points. Purdue took first place in the event with 167.5 points.
Senior Adam Cooper stood out for the Bulls on the day, taking the third place crown in the 174-pound weight class. Cooper lost his semifinal match to the top-ranked Ryan Lange of Purdue, but was able to come back and win two more matches against Ohio's Ed Willis and Lock Haven's Eric O'Connor to take third place.
Kyle Cerminara and Garrett Bontempo also found some success, each taking fourth place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Men's Soccer
Dave Pidgeon and Jenton Esworthy have been named to the men's soccer Academic All-MAC team, voted in by the faculty athletic representatives at each of the seven establishments that sponsor men's soccer, for their GPAs of 3.46 and 3.45 respectively.
