Swimming

Jennefer Brankovsky, Lisa Boettrich, Melissa Schafer and Trina Sinclair of the women's swimming team will all be participating this weekend in the U.S. Open Swimming Championships. The event will take place at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. After the Olympic Games and the NCAA Championships, this meet is considered to be the third fastest meet in the world.

Brankovsky will lead the way as she has qualified for four individual events. She will compete in the event's opening contest, the 200-meter individual medley, on Thursday as well as the 400-meter individual medley, 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter butterfly. The foursome of girls will be competing in the 800-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter freestyle relay.

The girls qualified for the meet by achieving standards set by USA Swimming. Also expected to take part in the event are Olympic Gold Medalists Misty Hyman and Brooke Bennett.

Wrestling

The Buffalo Bulls wrestling team's assistant coach Sean Gibbs has resigned his position in order to pursue other interests. Gibbs was an assistant on Head Coach Jim Beichner's staff and has been at UB since his arrival with Beichner for the past seven-plus years.

Gibbs is leaving the staff due to his acceptance of a job with a nationally known pharmaceutical company.

Rebecca Ashare

Ashare, of the UB volleyball team, was named to the 2002 Academic All-MAC Team. The league office made the announcement Thursday. Ashare was a middle hitter for the Bulls and recently finished her three-year career here at UB with 415 kills, 136 digs and 159 blocks. She has a perfect 4.0 GPA and is a psychology major.
