Rebecca Ashare
Ashare, a member of the UB women's volleyball team, has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball First Team for the 2002 season. This makes the senior psychology major with a 4.0 GPA eligible for Academic All-American honors. Ashare started the season trying to recover from a back injury and eventually the middle hitter played in 22 out of the Bulls' 29 matches this season. She currently has 392 kills and 155 blocks on her career.
UB runners Jeff Czyz, Todd Ludden, and Rick Stewart were named to the Academic All MAC team. The Bulls led all schools with three members.
Czyz is a junior computer science major with a 3.89 GPA. He was UB's top finisher at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational at Roberts Wesleyan College, with a 10th place showing out of 139 runners.
Ludden is a senior mathematics major with a 3.36 GPA. He had three top-10 finishes in six meets, with his personal best coming at the Miami Fall Classic, taking fourth place in 24:54.41.
Stewart, who is a senior exercise science major with a 3.83 GPA, earned four top-10 finishes in seven meets. He had a season-best time with a 25:15.95 showing and a seventh-place finish at the Miami Fall Classic.
The struggling hockey team placed veteran defenseman Jason Woolley on waivers Wednesday. Woolley can be claimed by any NHL team for 48 hours. If he is not picked up he will be re-assigned to Buffalo's AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans.
In other news, Buffalo officially became the worst team in the NHL Wednesday night when the Atlanta Thrashers defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in overtime. The Sabres are the only team in the league that has not reached the double-digit mark in points - they have nine. Atlanta now has 10 points along with Nashville. The Sabres are winless in their last nine games.
