Two assistant coaches for the University of Miami's (Ohio) football team were suspended on Wednesday because of their actions immediately after the game between the RedHawks and the Marshall Thundering Herd on Tuesday in Huntington, W.Va.
Jon Wauford, the defensive coordinator, was suspended for allegedly pushing a Herd fan that came onto the field right after the RedHawks' 36-34 loss. The man he shoved to the ground had to be taken away in a stretcher after his head bounced off the unforgiving astroturf field. Wauford was charged with battery, a misdemeanor, and was released on bond.
Assistant coach Tayer Johnson was suspended for the destruction of the Visiting Coaches' box, something he accepted the blame for right before he was suspended. Miami will be paying for the damages to the box.
"Both suspensions will be effective immediately and will be with pay, pending the outcome of a full investigation," said interim athletic director Steve D. Snyder.
Neither of the coaches will take part in practices or coaching activities for the time being.
"Miami has a rich tradition in athletics with high expectations for its coaches. These are leadership positions, and the individuals holding them are held to the highest standards," said Snyder. "We are disappointed that these actions took away from the competitive efforts of both teams last night."
Snyder also said that the tensions surrounding the rivalry and the game itself were intense, and included threats to the Miami football players and coaches.
"However, these tensions in no way excuse any unsportsmanlike behavior," said Snyder.
Marshall can clinch the East Division title with a win over Ohio Saturday. Had Miami won the game, they would have had the opportunity to win out and claim the division title.
